Bay State Dems stand together with colleague Scalise

- By CHRIS VILLANI

The all-Democratic Bay State delegation expressed support for U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) and the three others wounded in Alexandria, Va., and struck a tone of unity in the wake of the attack.

“Today Americans are united in our grief, our heavy hearts, our gratitude for quiet heroes and our resolve to come together, to be a better version of the country we love,” said U.S. Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy III in a statement.

“The responsibility for today’s vicious attack lays squarely at the feet of the gunman. But the responsibility for where we go from here lies in the hands of a nation that must show more than unity of reaction, but unity of response.”

Scalise, lobbyist Matt Mika, congressional staffer Zack Barth, and Capitol Police officer Crystal Griner were wounded by James T. Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old Illinois man alleged to be the shooter. The other officer, David Bailey, was treated for a minor injury.

Hodgkinson was shot by police and died from his injuries, according to President Trump.

Massachusetts Rep. Katherine Clark was among many in the delegation to extol the Capitol Police for their role in preventing further bloodshed.

“We stand united against this horrific act of violence and in our deep gratitude to the Capitol Police who saved countless lives through their courageous actions,” Clark said.

Many Bay State pols took to social media to express prayers and support.

“Thinking of @SteveScalise and my other colleagues practicing for the big game tomorrow night,” U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton tweeted. “We must act to put an end to this violence.”

“To @SteveScalise, the other shooting victims and their families: I am praying for you,” tweeted U.S. Sen. Edward J. Markey. “You have the strength of our nation w/ you right now.”

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren added, “[m]y thoughts are with @SteveScalise, all those injured, and the brave Capitol Police who protect us every day.”
