BC High found itself in an unfamiliar spot last night: down three goals in the second quarter of the Division 1 South title game against Duxbury. This might have been a problem early in the season, but coach Steve Lydon was confident.

“We’ve been talking about trying to play our game, not to the score,” Lydon said. “You have to stay level-headed.”

The No. 1 Eagles battled back from behind three times, finally taking the lead for good with a Charlie Pyne goal with just 3:54 remaining to defeat the No. 3 Dragons, 11-9, at Harvard Stadium.

Christian Price opened the scoring for the Eagles (19-3) with the first of his five goals four minutes in. Duxbury (176) used a goal by Riley Bergstrom and two by Jack Wood to jump out to a 3-1 lead at the end of the first.

In the second, Bobby Maimaron gave Duxbury a 4-1 lead. Pat Bulger answered for the Eagles, scoring the first two goals of his six-point (three goals, three assists) evening.

BC High had a 8-6 lead after three, but Charlie Gans capped a three-goal run by the Dragons to put them ahead. Max Djusberg tied the game, then Pyne’s goal gave the Eagles the lead for good. Price added a goal with 2:53 left and the Eagles defense stayed strong to secure the win.

Lincoln-Sudbury 9, Acton-Boxboro 7 — The Div. 1 North boys lacrosse final had a Dual County League flavor, as the No. 1 Warriors (18-1) edged the rival Colonials (16-5) at Harvard.

“We stuck with it, we kept cool, we tried not to take too many penalties,” said senior attack Jack Sutherland, who led L-S with four goals. “We kept our heads level and that is what helped us prevail.”

The defending state champion Warriors needed to keep their wits about them when the No. 3 Colonials jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first quarter. Sutherland’s first two goals tied the score six minutes in, and Brett Williams’ corner rip gave them a lead a minute and a half later. Lincoln-Sudbury added three more goals in the period.

Division 2

Hingham 17, Beverly 5 — For the second time in as many years, the Harbormen will have a shot at the Div. 2 state title. Top-ranked Hingham (22-3) punched its ticket with a rout of the No. 3 Panthers (13-10) at Norwell High.

Hingham was dominant from the onset, taking a 12-4 lead into halftime, thanks in large part to seven unanswered goals, including a four-goal outburst in the opening 2:39 of the second quarter, to help put Beverly out of commission early.

“We try to take what’s given to us and everyone is very unselfish, we don’t play with our heads down,” Hingham coach John Todd said. “That’s the bottom line for us, if you can’t play like that, as a team, you’re probably not going to get out on the field.”

Leading the way offensively were the captains, junior Frank Higgins (three goals) and seniors Devin Irvin (two goals), Jack Hennessey (two goals, assist) and Marc O’Rourke (two goals).

Division 3

Ipswich 11, Hanover 10 — Charlie Gillis’ goal with 14 seconds left gave the Tigers (15-2) a wild victory over the Indians (16-5) in a state semifinal in Norwell.

The Gillis tally thwarted a fourthquarter comeback by the Indians. Trailing 9-4, Hanover rallied as Neil Calkin scored three times and Mike McGlame added a pair, including one with 20 seconds left to tie the score at 10.

Ipswich jumped out to a 4-1 lead as Kilian Morrissey scored three of his five goals in the opening period. Hanover’s Tim Mullane notched a pair of goals to help cut the deficit to 5-3, but backto-back scores by Morrissey and Duke Kriksceonaitis allowed Ipswich to take a 7-4 lead into the half.
