John H. Arthur of Canton, engineering executive, 86
John H. Arthur of Milton, formerly of Canton, died Tuesday. He was 86.
He was a 1948 graduate of Milton High School.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Tufts University and a master’s degree in civil engineering from Northeastern University.
He served in the Army during the Korean War.
Mr. Arthur was employed by the environmental engineering firm Metcalf & Eddy from 1952 to 2004 and retired as senior vice president of M&E International.
He was a registered professional engineer in 11 states, the District of Colombia, Quebec and Singapore and specialized in the management of large wastewater treatment plant projects.
He was a life member of ASCE, the Water Environment Federation, Society of American Military Engineers, National Society of Professional Engineers and the American Public Works Association, served on the Canton Planning Board and was a deacon and moderator at his local church for many years.
He loved the outdoors, was an Eagle Scout, served as a scoutmaster for a troop in Milton and was active with scout troops in Canton.
Mr. Arthur also enjoyed camping, fishing and gardening, ballroom dancing with his wife and spending time with his children.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Janet M. (Fuller); four sons, James B. of Lakeville, Steven E. and Gordon H. of Canton and Dana E. of Natick; a daughter, Susan E. DeProspero of Vernon, Conn.; a brother, Harold F. of Littleton; a sister, Marjorie Lamkin of Wilmington; nine grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Congregational Church of Canton.
Burial will be in Milton Cemetery, Milton.
