Chapman, A’s beat Yankees

Matt Chapman hit a goahead two-run single in the eighth inning for his first career big league hit after having an earlier hit overturned by replay and the Oakland Athletics rallied for a 7-6 victory over the New York Yankees last night in Oakland.

After the Yankees intentiona­lly walked Stephen Vogt to load the bases with one out, Chapman hit a hard grounder down the third-base line against Jonathan Holder (1-1) that scored two runs.

Tigers 13, Rays 4 — NicK Castellano­s doubled, tripled and drove in four as host Detroit routed Tampa.

Before the game, the Tigers put designated hitter Victor Martinez on the 10day disabled list because of an irregular heartbeat.

White Sox 11, Blue Jays 4— Melky Cabrera homered, doubled and drove in five runs against his former team, leading Jose Quintana and Chicago in Toronto.

Indians 8, Twins 1— In Minneapoli­s, Carlos Carrasco pitched one-hit ball into the sixth, Jose Ramirez had three hits and Edwin Encarnacio­n homered as Cleveland beat pitching-thin Minnesota.

Rangers 10, Mariners 4 — Tyson Ross allowed just a pair of runs in his first start in 14 months and Carlos Gomez homered and knocked in four after being sidelined four weeks with a strained hamstring to help Texas beat Seattle.

Royals 3, Angels 1— Lorenzo Cain hit two homers and drove in three runs, and Ian Kennedy retired the first 17 Angels to end his 16-start winless skid in Kansas City’s sixth consecutiv­e win, this one in Anaheim against Los Angeles.

Cardinals 11, Orioles 2 — Carlos Martinez struck out eight in six sharp innings, and St. Louis hit a seasonhigh five home runs in a rout at Baltimore.

Marlins 5, Braves 0 — Dan Straily pitched into the seventh inning, Christian Yelich drove in three runs and Miami beat Brockton’s Sean Newcomb and host Atlanta.

The Braves and drafted pitcher Kyle Wright agreed to a minor league contract with a $7 million signing bonus, the highest in baseball since 2011.

Nationals 7, Mets 2 — Max Scherzer struck out 10 over eight masterful innings to reach double digits for the fifth straight start and allowed just four hits, leading visiting Washington over New York.

Before the game, pitcher Edwin Jackson agreed to a minor league contract with the Nationals following his release by the Orioles. The Mets put pitcher Matt Harvey and outfielder Juan Lagares on the 10-day disabled list.

Cubs 9, Pirates 5 — Anthony Rizzo almost led off his third straight game with a homer, losing his bid on a replay reversal, before helping key a six-run rally in the ninth inning that sent Chicago over host Pittsburgh.

The Cubs put switchhitt­er Ben Zobrist on the 10-day disabled list because of an inflamed right wrist.

Rockies 10, Giants 8 — In Denver, rookie Antonio Senzatela (9-2) battled through six innings to tie for the major league lead in wins, and Colorado beat San Francisco.

Diamondbac­ks 5, Phillies 4 — Gregor Blanco hit a tying two-run homer and Jake Lamb drove in the goahead run with a sacrifice fly to rally Arizona to the win in Philadelph­ia.

Dodgers 3, Reds 1 — Lefthander Alex Wood remained unbeaten by pitching four-hit ball over eight innings, as Los Angeles handed host Cincinnati its seventh straight loss.

Brewers 6, Padres 5 — Eric Thames hit Milwaukee’s first walk-off home run of the season in the bottom of the 10th, besting San Diego. Thames’ 19th home run came when he drove a 1-1 pitch from Ryan Butcher (3-3) off the top of the left-field fence.
