Tigers rally for crown

- By ROBYN HAYES

Kilian Morrissey scored the tying goal midway through the fourth quarter to highlight a threegoal performance, and Tommy Ginolfi’s tally with 1:58 left proved to be the game-winner as Ip swich won the Division 3 boys lacrosse crown for the first time since 2003 with an 8-7 triumph over Grafton last night at Boston University’s Nickerson Field.

With less than four minutes left, Pat Gillis gave the Tigers (20-2) just their second lead of the game, putting them up 7-6. About two minutes later, Ginolfi beat Indians goalie Matt Nicalek (10 saves) with a low bouncer, and that ended up being the difference as Grafton (22-3) made it a one-goal game again with nine seconds left.

“It was just a big relief because we knew we had a little bit of a cushion,” said Ginolfi on giving his team a two-goal lead. “If they got a goal at the very end like they did, we knew we still had another chance to get the ball back and possess it, and that is what it came down to.”

Anthony D’Angelo, who also had three assists, scored his first of the night to pull the Indians within one in the final seconds, and came within inches of tying it with just two seconds left — but his final shot went wide right as the horn sounded.

“This game is exactly what I thought it would be,” said Ipswich coach Glenn Foster. “I thought on paper we were as equal as could be, and that is what it was.

“A one-goal lead in lacrosse is nothing, I think that second goal we got was huge, and there just wasn’t enough time for them to come back, but it was close all game.”
