SIX LAX LOCALS EARN LERCH SCHOLARSHIPS
It was only fitting that six high school athletes were awarded scholarships in honor of late Herald journalist Bruce Lerch at the state lacrosse championships at Boston University yesterday.
Lerch passed away in 2015. He was beloved by the Boston sports community for his work in high school sports, particularly lacrosse. The Bruce Lerch Memorial Scholarship Fund was established after his death in order to preserve Bruce's dedication to high school sports and helping the community.
“I got to know Bruce a little bit and followed all of his work over the years,” Lincoln-Sudbury senior and scholarship recipient Jack Sutherland said. “He's done so many amazing things, he's brought lacrosse to venues like this, and in Massachusetts high school lacrosse we owe him everything.”
Foxboro senior Hallie Canfield was another one of the six inaugural scholarship recipients.
“I am so honored,” Canfield said. “My whole high school career was based around sports. It's awesome to be given a scholarship in honor of someone who had the same passions I do.”
The other scholarship recipients were seniors Riley Bergstrom of Duxbury, Daniel Freitas of South Shore Charter, Ryan Puglisi of Andover and Krystina Goroshko of BridgewaterRaynham.
