Condos eyed at site of Dorchester funeral home
A Hub restaurateur is looking to demolish a Dorchester funeral home to build a three-story, 17-unit residential building.
Joey Arcari wants to raze the Scally & Trayers Funeral Home at 54 Pleasant St. and build a new condo building at a cost of about $7 million, according to the project filing submitted to the Boston Planning & Development Agency.
Acari owns the Somerville-based Tavern in the Square chain of 10 restaurants, and The Playwright in South Boston.
The funeral home is expected to end its run by the end of July, according to Arcari, who purchased the property last July for $1.6 million. The site, at the corner of Pearl Street, is east of Uphams Corner and Jones Hill, and a block west of Dorchester Avenue.
The new building, designed by Brookline’s Sousa Design Architects, would have 15 market-rate and two affordable condos, with on-site below-grade parking for 20 vehicles.
The proposed development would create a “new, attractive and energy-efficient building that will enliven and visually (enhance) the residential look and feel of this primary intersection along Pleasant Street,” the filing states.
The Dorchester project would be the second residential development for Arcari, who’s also building 18 apartments and a restaurant called The Broadway to replace the former Boston Beer Garden on South Boston’s East Broadway. That approximately $9 million project is expected to be finished in September.
“I’m just trying to diversify from the restaurant business,” said Arcari, who’s been an owner in that industry since 1995.
