Judge hits 25th, but Yankees fall to Angels

-

Albert Pujols lined a go-ahead single during a messy, four-run rally in the seventh inning and the Los Angeles Angels overcame Aaron Judge’s major league-leading 25th home run to beat the Yankees, 105, last night in New York.

The Angels took advantage of three errors and two wild pitches during a late surge, as Los Angeles sent the AL East leaders to their eighth loss in nine games.

Cameron Maybin led off the game with a home run against Luis Severino (5-3). But with the Angels trailing 5-4, it was Maybin’s potential double-play grounder that skipped past second baseman Starlin Castro for an error and set up the comeback.

Yusmeiro Petit (2-0) tossed two perfect innings of relief.

White Sox 9, Twins 0 — In Minneapolis, Jose Abreu and Todd Frazier each hit two-run homers in the first inning, and Chicago beat Minnesota after a rain-delayed start of 4 hours and 50 minutes that was the longest in Twins history.

The downpour began about two hours before the scheduled first pitch. The skies were dry for about an hour at one point, but the tarp never left the infield with another wave of the wet stuff on the way. With the radar promising an end, Twins officials made the decision to wait.

By the time the first pitch was thrown, about 10 percent of the announced attendance of 27,684 remained. The Twins granted all ticket-holders an exchange for a seat of equal or lesser value for any game from Aug. 29-Oct. 1. Rangers 11, Blue Jays 4 — In Arlington, Texas, Carlos Gomez homered twice to drive in five runs and Texas beat Toronto for a split of the four-game series.

Mike Napoli and Robinson Chirinos also homered for the Rangers off Marcus Stroman (7-4). Gomez has five homers in his six games since returning from the disabled list last week after missing a month with a right hamstring strain.

Martin Perez (4-6) went six innings, and all four runs he allowed came in the fifth. The lefty gave up nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Indians 6, Orioles 3 — Austin Jackson had three hits and three RBI, Erik Gonzalez homered and Cleveland put on another offensive show at the expense of host Baltimore.

The Indians won 3 of 4 from the Orioles to complete a 7-1 road trip. Cleveland has scored at least five runs in nine straight games.

Baltimore’s pitching staff has given up at least five runs in 19 straight games, one short of the major league record set by the 1924 Philadelphia Phillies. Astros 12, Athletics 9

— Josh Reddick homered and scored four runs, Jake Marisnick and Marwin Gonzalez also deep and Houston beat host Oakland.

National League

Cubs 11, Marlins 1 — Addison Russell had four hits, including a home run, as Chicago beat host Miami.

The Cubs demoted struggling slugger Kyle Schwarber to Triple-A. Schwarber is batting just .171 with 12 homers and 28 RBs in 64 games. No roster replacement was named. Diamondbacks 10, Rockies 3 — In Denver, Paul Goldschmidt and Chris Owings hit three-run homers, Zack Godley threw well into the eighth inning, and Arizona beat Colorado. Arizona are a season-high 19 games above .500. Brewers 4, Pirates 2 — Corey Knebel broke Arodlis Chapman’s modern-era record for most consecutive games by a reliever with a strikeout at a season’s start, fanning a batter for the 38th straight game and closing out Milwaukee’s win over host Pittsburgh. Phillies 5, Cardinals 1 — Aaron Nola pitched shutout ball into the eighth inning, Freddy Galvis and Tommy Joseph homered, and host Philadelphia beat St. Louis to stop a five-game losing streak. Braves 12, Giants 11 — Lane Adams delivered a pinch-hit, three-run homer in Atlanta’s eight-run fifth inning for a rain-delayed victory against Matt Cain and visiting San Francisco.
