Pats WR Mitchell catches book deal

Malcolm Mitchell has a three-book deal with Scholastic, the children’s publisher announced yesterday. The books include a newly illustrate­d edition of his self-published “The Magician’s Hat,” to come out next May, and two more original works.

Mitchell is a literacy advocate who founded the Read With Malcolm program. He caught 32 passes last year during the regular season and another six in the Super Bowl, when the Patriots came from behind and defeated the Atlanta Falcons, 34-28, for their fifth championsh­ip. . . .

Coach Andy Reid signed a contract extension with the Kansas City Chiefs, who also parted ways with general manager John Dorsey. Reid, 59, has a 43-21 record and three playoff appearance­s in four years with the Chiefs. . . .

Derek Carr and the Raiders finalized his long-expected contract extension worth a reported five years and $125 million, making him the highest-paid player in league history.

Sergio in hunt

Sergio Garcia opened his first event in Europe since his Masters win by shooting a bogey-free 6-underpar 66 to lie 2 strokes off the lead at the BMW Internatio­nal Open in Munich.

ASU’s Kush dead

Frank Kush, the fearsome coach who transforme­d Arizona State from a backwater football program into a powerhouse, died at 88. Kush compiled a 176-54-1 record and nine conference titles while coaching the Sun Devils from 1958-79. . . .

Keith Loneker, the former Kansas offensive lineman who spent three years in the NFL before becoming an actor, died of cancer at 46. . . .

Joe Ford, a member of Vanderbilt’s F-Troop team that won the 1974 SEC regularsea­son title, was found dead at the scene of a car accident in Paducah, Ky. He was 64.
