Lawn on D packs holiday weekend with fun

- By BRETT MILANO

Rest assured that there are no live sharks anywhere near Lawn on D (unless you walk to the Aquarium, of course). But there will be some on screen tomorrow night, setting the stage for a full weekend of pre-holiday entertainment.

The Lawn is pulling out the stops this weekend, with one of its most packed schedules this summer. There’s a bonus today, with the lawn opening for food and picnicking at 3 p.m., and a performance by the band Flipside starting at 7 p.m. A seven-piece band with male and female singers, Flipside was named the city’s best wedding band by Boston magazine last year, and has played high-level functions such as the Boston Ballet’s 50th anniversary gala and Deval Patrick’s 50th birthday. When the band played a launch party for Boston Common magazine last year, it was introduced by none other than Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler.

The Berklee-sponsored Lunch Break concerts continue tomorrow at noon with Nat Reed. A velvetvoiced singer drawing from R&B and pop, she has recently released a video of her elegant ballad “Gold” (yes, Nat is short for Natalie). Boston Herald Radio will also be in the house, broadcasting live starting at 9 a.m. and running through the afternoon. The summer cornhole tournament continues at 6:30 p.m., and the night wraps up with a big-screen showing at 8:30 p.m. of the summer classic “Jaws.” And if you’re planning a beach trip afterward, just remember: They caught that critter a long time ago.

On Saturday afternoon, the Lawn throws a block party with a full slate of family-friendly activities. Starting at noon, there’ll be games, including bubble soccer, volleyball with giant beachballs, a rock climbing wall and minigolf (with glow-in-the-dark golf balls so you can keep playing into the evening). There will also be salsadancing lessons with a live band, and more live music from the party-perfect band Never in Vegas, which does modern rock and rap hits, and even has a Garth Brooks tune or two for the moms and dads. Finally there’s another concert performance at 6 p.m. featuring alternative singersongwriter MB Padfield, a self-proclaimed “six-string wild child” whose original and cover material is both rocking and tuneful. (According to her website, she plans to marry Jimmy Page, but alas, we hear he’s taken.)

This week’s Lawn festivities continue through the holiday. The usual “Sunday Funday” continues this weekend with another visit from the popular band Closing Time (beginning at 2 p.m.), followed by DJ So & So, who spins in the evening starting at 7 p.m. Then comes “Southie Monday” with an afternoon show from the Endless Summer band, doing a summer soundtrack of Buffett, Beach Boys and more. The band and DJ So & So both return for the July 4th holiday on Tuesday, so come on down and eat, drink and hang out in the sun.
