Q. Dear Rick, I deal directly with my car and home insurance companies, but it has been suggested to me that I consider hiring an independent insurance agent instead. Do you think that’s a good idea? — Mike, Worcester.

A. Thanks for the question, Mike. Yes, I think having a good, experienced insurance agent is a very good idea for a variety of reasons.

First, an independent agent can shop your policy to different companies in search of the best premium. They will also know the ins and outs of little-known money saving strategies like bundling your insurance with one company and setting higher deductibles.

Just recently, a client of mine whose auto insurance had skyrocketed switched to an independent insurance agent who moved him to a different company and made a number of small changes to the policy and how it was paid for. The result? His yearly premium was cut nearly in half.

Another reason to hire an independent insurance agent is because it will be much easier to have your agent deal with your insurance company when making a claim. They’ll know who to talk to, what has to be filed and will usually fill out and file a good deal of the paperwork for you.

Over the years, my agent has saved me untold hours that I would have spent simply figuring out how to proceed. My agent was invaluable when I was faced with a couple of fender benders (not my fault!) that I was involved in (both on the accursed Southeast Expressway!).

Finally, a good agent will not only save you valuable time when fighting a claim, they can also take care of routine but often time-consuming tasks like re-registering your car and renewing your license. They can also advise you on insurance you probably need but might not be aware of, like renters’ contents insurance for your kids when they go off to college.
