Warren joins McCain, others on Afghan trip
Bay State U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren has been traveling with a delegation of senators to Pakistan and Afghanistan, according to tweets put out by Arizona U.S. Sen. John McCain this week.
Warren’s office did not return phone calls or emails yesterday. But Reuters confirmed that the state’s senior senator, who is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, joined McCain as part of a delegation that traveled to Islamabad, Pakistan.
McCain, who chairs the panel, met with Pakistan’s top foreign policy official, Sartaj Aziz, and the country’s army chief, Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa, according to Reuters.
“We will not have peace in the region without Pakistan,” McCain said.
McCain tweeted photos yesterday showing himself, Warren and others.
“Productive delegation meeting w/ Special Advisor to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz in #Islamabad #Pakistan this wkend,” McCain tweeted.
Reuters also reported that the Arizona senator was accompanied by U.S. Sens. Lindsey Graham, Sheldon Whitehouse and David Perdue.
“Our relationship is more important perhaps than ever before,” McCain told Pakistan TV.
They also traveled to Afghanistan to meet with Gen. John Nicholson, the commander of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan, according to McCain’s tweets.
“Delegation with General John Nicholson at a memorial honoring US & international forces fighting in #Afghanistan” McCain tweeted, along with photos that included Warren.
Earlier this year, President Trump dropped the “mother of all bombs” in Afghanistan in an attempt to take out a major ISIS haven. It also signaled that his administration intends to take a more aggressive military stance overseas than former President Barack Obama did.
