Brewers sink Orioles

-

Travis Shaw helped stake Brent Suter to a big early lead and the Brewers lefthander had little trouble handling the Baltimore Orioles yesterday in Milwaukee.

Shaw started the rout with a go-ahead single in a four-run first inning, then left after he was hit on his left hand by a pitch during the Brewers’ 8-1 interleague win over the Orioles.

Backed by a 7-0 lead in the second, Suter (1-1) struck out eight in six innings, allowing an unearned run and four hits — all singles. The 27-year-old left-hander made his second big league start, pitching in place of Chase Anderson, on the disabled list because of a left oblique strain.

“Our hitters gave us a seven-run cushion early, so it was a dream come true,” Suter said of winning his first start at Miller Park.

Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell said Suter earned another start and will pitch this weekend when the Brewers play the New York Yankees.

Wade Miley (3-7) gave up seven runs, seven hits and two walks in 12⁄ innings, raising his ERA to 5.20 from 4.54. He is 1-4 with an 11.69 ERA in his past six starts.

Manny Pina and Orlando Arcia had three hits each, and Arcia scored from first base on Suter’s infield single in the third.

Shaw was hit on the left hand by a 93 mph pitch in the second. He stayed in the game and scored the Brewers’ seventh run. He later was replaced by Hernan Perez at the start of the fourth inning.

National League

Nationals 3, Mets 2 — Ryan Raburn drove in the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and Washington survived another bullpen collapse for a victory over visiting New York.

Curtis Granderson tied the game with a two-out, two-run homer off Nationals reliever Matt Albers (4-1).

Rockies 5, Reds 3— Rookie Raimel Tapia finished a single shy of the cycle as Colorado beat Cincinnati in Denver. Tapia’s homer in the sixth broke a tie game as the Rockies returned home off a 1-8 trip.

Cardinals 14, Marlins 6 — Rookie Luke Voit hit his first major league homer and drove in four runs, Tommy Pham reached base five times and St. Louis beat visiting Miami.

Phillies 4, Pirates 0 — Aaron Nola struck out eight in seven splendid innings, Freddy Galvis and Maikel Franco hit two-run homers and host Philadelphia beat Pittsburgh.

American League

Yankees 6, Blue Jays 3 — Masahiro Tanaka pitched seven sharp innings for his second straight win following a long slump, and host New York beat skidding Toronto.

Hours after announcing they’ll both compete in the Home Run Derby next week, All-Star sluggers Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez sparked New York’s offense. Consecutive singles by those Baby Bombers in the first helped the Yankees scratch out two runs against Marcus Stroman. Judge’s leadoff single and Sanchez’s double set up a four-run eighth that included Chase Headley’s two-run double off Ryan Tepera.

Headley was hit by a pitch to force home a run in the first and finished with three RBI. Jacoby Ellsbury drew a bases-loaded walk from Stroman (8-5).

Toronto has dropped five straight and 9-of-11.

In other news involving the Blue Jays, Miguel Montero, who was cast off by the World Series champions, has a new home north of the border. The veteran catcher was traded by the Chicago Cubs to Toronto, six days after he blamed Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta for allowing seven stolen bases in a 6-1 loss to Washington.

Twins 9, Angels 5 — Max Kepler tied a career high with four hits, including a home run, Adalberto Mejia earned his third straight win and Minnesota beat Los Angeles in Minneapolis.

White Sox 7, Athletics 2— Todd Frazier doubled twice and drove in two runs to back Carlos Rodon’s first win of the season, and visiting Chicago beat slumping Oakland. Melky Cabrera added three hits and an RBI.

Royals 3, Mariners 1 — Ian Kennedy allowed one run pitching into the seventh inning, Mike Moustakas and Alex Gordon both hit solo home runs, and Kansas City beat host Seattle. Kennedy (3-6) won his third straight decision with one of his best performances of the season.

Elsewhere in baseball — Along with Judge and Sanchez, Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton will participate in the All-Star Home Run Derby at Miami on July 10. Stanton will defend his title in his home ballpark.

Also lined up to compete are Miami teammate Justin Bour, Minnesota slugger Miguel Sano and Los Angeles Dodgers rookie Cody Bellinger, who began the day leading the National League with 24 homers. Colorado outfielder Charlie Blackmon and Kansas City third baseman Mike Moustakas round out the field. . . .

Francisco Cervelli rejoined the Pirates’ active roster after his second stint this month on the sevenday concussion disabled list.
