FIREWORKS ON THE FOURTH

Amorous action shocks Cape Cod beachgoers

-

While most of Cape Cod is on high alert for Great White sharks, another species caused a major disruption on the Fourth of July at a popular, picturesque beach in Dennis: drunken college students allegedly getting busy in the water.

Thousands of people, including many families, were soaking up the sun and surf at Mayflower Beach Tuesday afternoon when beachgoers told the beach monitor four people were having sex in the water, Detective Matthew Turner wrote in a police report filed in Orleans District Court.

Turner, who was on patrol at the beach, was then quickly flagged down by a large group of people pointing at the water. One woman told the detective they’d been going at it for at least 20 minutes, Turner wrote, while a man with two small children said, “This is disgusting. Why is this allowed to go on here?”

About 100 feet from shore, Turner spotted a man and a blond woman in an embrace and a second man and another blond woman in an embrace.

“I could not observe exactly what was going on, however both couples were extremely closely embraced,” the detective wrote. “Each embraced couple were at a minimum kissing and stumbling about in the waves.”

About 25 people, including children, were on the shore “watching in disbelief as to what was going on,” the detective wrote, while another 30 people were in the water, “watching the two couples and cheering them on.”

Although Turner yelled out to the amorous couples — and a lifeguard blew her whistle and told them to get out of the water — he said they continued to smooch. Finally, they came to shore when another lifeguard went in the water.

All four denied “doing anything” in the water. The detective said he could smell a “strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from their mouths” and they were all slurring their words. The two couples yelled and cried at the cop to let them go.

As Turner tried to talk to them, the crowd around them grew to about 300 people and the detective called for backup. The two men, ages 17 and 19, and two women, ages 18 and 19, were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. Another 19 yearold was also arrested for disorderly conduct.

One of the alleged canoodlers told me he was just kissing his female friend and was not having sex.

“I am a little bummed out that it got blown out of proportion so bad and me and my friends look bad. I’m just going to forget about it and move on,” he told me. “It was, overall, a good Fourth of July and I hope everybody had a nice holiday, especially you guys at the office. God Bless America.”

Beachgoers weren’t happy yesterday when they learned of allegations of X-rated frolicking.

Marielen Pratt, 56, has been going to Mayflower Beach for 25 years and was there with her young grandson.

“There’s plenty of hotels on the Cape and they should have found one,” Pratt said. “I would have said, ‘ Get out of the water and take that elsewhere.’ ”
