NY mayor called out for picking protest over mourning cop

Some in the police fraternity are joining ranks with the NYPD to condemn New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio for skipping out on a vigil honoring a slain officer.

“How distasteful. I couldn’t believe it when I saw it,” retired Woburn police officer Bob DiNapoli said on Boston Herald Radio’s “Morning Meeting” show yesterday. “Here’s the mayor going to protest his president in another country. Seriously?”

De Blasio joined a demonstration as the keynote speaker in Germany that coincided with the G-20 summit in Hamburg Saturday. During his remarks, he led the crowd in applauding Hamburg police for protecting protesters.

That very night, New York City cops held a vigil to honor Officer Miosotis Familia, 48, who was shot and killed on the job early Wednesday morning. The mother of three was gunned down in a police vehicle by Alexander Bonds, 34.

For DiNapoli, Familia’s murder hits close to home. He was shot and wounded while responding to a robbery in 2011, and co-founded a support group for officers wounded in the line of duty with retired Somerville detective Mario Oliveira.

DiNapoli said he had a hard time understanding de Blasio’s priorities.

“There’s more important things than going and showing your face in Germany because you protest your own president,” he said. “I don’t think he’s a human being, to tell you the truth.”

DiNapoli said the mayor’s apparent disregard for the slain cop’s vigil displays arrogance, and contributes to mounting tension between the NYPD and De Blasio’s administration.

“I just don’t know where this guy can add any more gas to the fire. I just don’t get it,” he said.

DiNapoli says this latest act demonstrates how much the mayor “doesn’t care” about “this mourning police department.”

He also said a cop’s job is treacherous — all the time. “Every day ... you’re seeing people at their worst,” he said.

“What more can he do to these police officers to tell them they’re not worth anything to him?” DiNapoli said of the Big Apple mayor. “It’s really terrible.”

DiNapoli also questioned why the mayor’s staff didn’t step in and stop him from leaving the city.

Familia’s funeral service will be held today at World Changers Church in the Bronx.

And, DiNapoli added, “how can (de Blasio) show up at the funeral?”
