Tigers attack produces win

Michael Fulmer pitched eight strong innings and J.D. Martinez drove in five runs as the Tigers scored an 11-1 victory against the Toronto Blue Jays in American League play last night in Detroit.

Nicholas Castellano­s, Miguel Cabrera and Martinez homered for the Tigers.

Fulmer won his fourth straight start, giving up one run and two hits while walking one and striking out three.

Kendrys Morales had a single in the second, but the Blue Jays didn’t get another hit until Troy Tulowitzki’s infield single in the eighth. Athletics 5, Indians 3 — Khris Davis hit his 25th homer, a two-run shot in the ninth inning that gave host Oakland, which got two homers from rookie Matt Chapman, the walkoff win against AL Central-leading Cleveland.

Rays 6, Angels 3 — In Anaheim, Calif., Alex Cobb continued his strong recent turnaround by tossing 72⁄ innings 3 of one-run ball, and Logan Morrison hit his 25th home run of the season to lead Tampa Bay over Los Angeles.

Twins 4, Astros 2 — Brian Dozier homered to lead off the game and Eddie Rosario hit a two-run double with the bases loaded in the sixth to push visiting Minnesota past Houston, with Ervin Santana picking up the win. Mariners 4, White Sox 3— Nelson Cruz and Kyle Seager homered, and sloppy Seattle — which committed three errors and saw Felix Hernandez plunk Jose Abreu twice and throw a wild pitch — edged host Chicago. Rangers 1, Royals 0 — ShinSoo Choo flared a lazy fly ball down the left field line with one out in the ninth inning, driving in the only run an giving visiting Texas the win against Kansas City.

Cubs 10, Orioles 3 — Making his first appearance at Camden Yards since he was traded four years ago, Jake Arrieta settled down after a wild start to hold Baltimore to four hits over 62⁄ innings 3 and lead visiting Chicago to the victory.

Addison Russell, Albert Almora and Anthony Rizzo also hit home runs for the Cubs.

National League

Dodgers 7, Marlins 1— Cody Bellinger became the first rookie in franchise history to hit for the cycle and Alex Wood became the first pitcher for the franchise in more than a century to win his first 11 decisions in a season, helping NL West-leading Los Angeles to its eighth straight victory, against host Miami.

Nationals 10, Reds 7 — Anthony Rendon hit his second career grand slam and added a two-run homer, Ryan Rayburn also connected, and NL East-best Washington overcame Scooter Gennett’s four-RBI night and held on to beat host Cincinnati, after announcing starter Joe Ross will undergo Tommy John surgery.

Brewers 3, Phillies 2 — Travis Shaw hit his 20th home run of the season leading off the eighth inning and NL Central-leading Milwaukee edged visiting Philadelph­ia to move a season-high 11 games over .500.

Padres 5, Giants 3 — Hector Sanchez hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning and host San Diego prevailed against San Francisco, spoiling ace Madison Bumgarner’s return from the disabled list.

Mets 9, Rockies 3 — Jay Bruce, Jose Reys and pitcher Seth Lugo all homered to help host New York beat Colorado, which lost starter Tyler Chatwood to injury in a wild first inning. Cardinals 4, Pirates 0 — Lance Lynn worked 61⁄ innings 3 and added a rare runscoring double, and Tommy Pham had three hits and an RBI, leading St. Louis to the shutout of Pittsburgh. Braves 8, Diamondbac­ks 5— Little-used Lane Adams drove in three runs with a go-ahead, pinch-hit, basesloade­d double in the sixth, and Atlanta topped visiting Arizona.
