Twins rally in eighth sends Yankees down

Eddie Rosario had two RBI doubles and Eduardo Escobar added the goahead, pinch-hit single in the eighth inning to help the Minnesota Twins to a 4-2 victory over the New York Yankees last night in Minneapoli­s.

Brian Dozier had two hits and Adalberto Mejia gave up one run and struck out four in 51⁄ innings for the Twins, who were tied 2-2 when Escobar delivered a base hit to left field off left-hander Caleb Smith (01). Rosario followed with his second double of the game, and Brandon Kintzler picked up his 26th save.

Taylor Rogers (5-1) pitched 11⁄ innings of scoreless relief for the win.

Yankees star slugger Aaron Judge went 0-for-3 with an intentiona­l walk and is 1-for-21 since his electric performanc­e in the All-Star Home Run Derby.

Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda is set to have Tommy John surgery this week to repair a torn ligament in his right elbow, likely putting him out of action until late next year. Also, first baseman Greg Bird will have ankle surgery and will miss the next six weeks.

Orioles 3, Rangers 1— Seth Smith hit a tiebreakin­g homer in the seventh inning and host Baltimore used a strong performanc­e by its struggling pitching staff to beat Texas.

Tigers 10, Royals 2 — Nicholas Castellano­s and Mikie Mahtook went deep, Jordan Zimmermann smothered host Kansas City with strikes and the Detroit opened a four-game series with a rout.

The Royals reinstated reliever Neftali Feliz from the paternity list and optioned right-hander Miguel Almonte to Triple-A Omaha. Feliz has a 2.57 ERA in seven appearance­s. Kansas City also recalled outfielder Billy Burns and optioned Jorge Soler.

Mariners 9, Astros 7 — Kyle Seager and Danny Valencia hit back-to-back homers in the 10th inning to lift visiting Seattle over Houston.

Rays 3, Athletics 2 — Jake Odorizzi and two relievers combined on a two-hitter, and visiting Tampa Bay beat Oakland.

National League

Nationals 6, Reds 1— Ryan Zimmerman set the franchise career home run record with a solo shot, and Bryce Harper also connected as Washington powered to a four-game sweep of host Cincinnati.

Stephen Strasburg (10-3) recovered from his shortest start of the season by fanning 11 in seven innings and allowing four hits, including Eugenio Suarez’ home run.

Cardinals 6, Mets 3 — Paul DeJong homered for the fourth straight game and Adam Wainwright hit an RBI double while winning his fourth consecutiv­e start, sending St. Louis past host New York.

Pirates 4, Brewers 2 — Gregory Polanco doubled twice, drove in two runs and threw out a potential go-ahead run at the plate to lead surging Pittsburgh over visiting Milwaukee.

Marlins 6, Phillies 5 — Giancarlo Stanton homered twice and Dee Gordon hit an RBI single with two outs in the 10th inning that sent host Miami over Philadelph­ia.

Cubs 4, Braves 3 — Jon Lester bounced back from the shortest start of his career by allowing only one run in seven innings and visiting Chicago stopped Atlanta’s ninth-inning comeback.

The Braves activated utility players Sean Rodriguez (rotator cuff) and Danny Santana (infection) from the disabled list. Righthande­r Jason Hursh and infielder Jace Peterson were optioned to Triple-A.

Rockies 9, Padres 6 — In Denver, Charlie Blackmon’s fourth leadoff homer of the season hit the facing of the third deck, hard-throwing rookie German Marquez tied a career high with nine strikeouts and scuffling Colorado beat San Diego.

Indians 5, Giants 3 — Josh Tomlin struck out five and pitched into the eighth inning to win back-to-back starts for the first time this year, and visiting Cleveland capitalize­d on two costly errors to rally and beat San Francisco.
