Beau’s body found in Brockton woman’s closet

- By OWEN BOSS

A Brockton woman was arrested yesterday in connection with the gruesome death of her 44-year-old boyfriend, whose stabbed and decomposing body was found stuffed in a closet in her apartment four days after his family reported him missing, authorities said.

Kathryn R. Podgurski, 33, is behind bars and facing an accessory to murder charge after Brockton cops found the decaying body of her boyfriend, Joseph E. Shaw, in a closet inside her Green Street apartment, according to Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz, who added in a statement, “it was apparent to police that Shaw had been deceased for some period of time.”

Cruz said it was Podgurski who flagged down Brockton police about 10:30 p.m. Friday before taking them up to her third-floor apartment, where she showed them Shaw’s body. The body, Cruz said, had “multiple, severe stab wounds ... consistent with a homicide.”

A concerned family member, Cruz said, had reported Shaw missing Monday.

After conducting a series of interviews and executing numerous search warrants yesterday, Cruz said state police and Brockton cops placed Podgurski under arrest.

Shaw’s body has been turned over to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, which will determine the cause and manner of death.

Cruz said investigators do not believe Shaw’s death was the result of a “random act of violence.”

The investigation is being conducted by Brockton police and state police detectives assigned to Cruz’s office.

Podgurski was held pending her arraignment tomorrow in Brockton District Court.
