Rays’ slide at 5 with loss to O’s

Kevin Gausman pitched six strong innings, Adam Jones homered and the Baltimore Orioles sent the Tampa Bay Rays to their season-worst fifth straight loss, 5-0, last night in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The Rays began the day tied for the second AL wild card spot. Baltimore won for the sixth time in eight games.

Gausman (7-7) gave up five hits and struck out eight. Darren O’Day, Brad Brach and Richard Bleier completed a six-hitter.

Blake Snell (0-6) went a career-high seven-plus innings. The lefty, who entered with 19-of-30 career starts lasting five or fewer innings, allowed three runs and six hits.

Jones has an RBI in six straight games.

Blue Jays 4, Athletics 2 — Francisco Liriano won for the first time in three starts, Russell Martin homered and host Toronto dropped Oakland, snapping a threegame losing streak.

Martin had two hits and Ezequiel Carrera reached base three times as the last-place Blue Jays won the opener of a seven-game homestand.

Royals 5, Tigers 3 — Salvador Perez and Mike Moustakas hit consecutiv­e homers in the 12th inning, and visiting Kansas City won its sixth straight game, topping Detroit.

Earlier, the Royals helped their pitching staff by acquiring Trevor Cahill and two relievers in a trade with San Diego.

National League

Cardinals 8, Rockies 2 — Randal Grichuk hit a tworun homer, Mike Leake pitched seven scoreless innings and host St. Louis rocked Colorado.

Leake’s six-strikeout performanc­e was his best since giving up one run in eight innings against Washington on June 30. It was the first win for Leake (7-8) against the Rockies since Aug. 10, 2011.

Diamondbac­ks 10, Braves 2— J.D. Martinez hit a three-run home run to help Zack Greinke and Arizona cruise to a win against Atlanta in Phoenix.

Interleagu­e

White Sox 3, Cubs 1 — Adam Engel and Matt Davidson homered and the White Sox snapped a ninegame losing streak with a win against the crosstown rival Cubs at Chicago’s Wrigley Field.

The Cubs lost for just the second time in 10 games following the All-Star break.

Dodgers 6, Twins 4 — Cody Bellinger continued his super rookie season, drilling a three-run homer in the eighth inning, his 28th of the season, to rally host Los Angeles past Minnesota.

The Dodgers placed ace Clayton Kershaw on the 10-day disabled list with a back injury. He could miss 4-6 weeks.

Indians 6, Reds 2 — Josh Tomlin pitched six efficient innings, Carlos Santana homered twice and host Cleveland won its fourth straight, over tumbling Cincinnati in the makeup of a May 25 rainout.

Marlins 4, Rangers 0 — Giancarlo Stanton hit more two home runs and moved into a tie for the major league lead, sending Adam Conley and Miami over Texas in Arlington, Texas.

Astros 13, Phillies 4 — Jose Altuve had two doubles and two singles, stretched his sizzling hitting streak to 16 games and helped visiting Houston rout Philadelph­ia.

Mets 5, Padres 3 — Jacob deGrom (12-3) won his eighth straight start, giving up two runs in eight innings and striking out eight as New York won in San Diego.

Elsewhere in baseball — The Minnesota Twins acquired veteran left-handed pitcher Jaime García, catcher Anthony Recker and cash from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for minor league pitcher Huascar Ynoa.
