Frazier’s debut in NY an oddity

-

Todd Frazier had an unforgettable first at-bat in his home debut for the Yankees, grounding into a rare runscoring triple play as his new team beat the Cincinnati Reds, 4-2, in interleague action last night in New York.

Rookie Jordan Montgomery (7-5) took a no-hit try into the sixth inning, and Didi Gregorius homered to boost the AL East contenders, his third in two games.

Last-place Cincinnati lost for the 10th time in 12 games. Billy Hamilton’s bid for a tying extra-base hit in the eighth was thwarted when pinch-runner Zack Cozart, out of the starting lineup to rest his tender quadriceps, hobbled into third.

The bases were loaded with no outs when Frazier batted in the second inning. He hit a hard grounder up the middle and shortstop Jose Peraza gloved it, stepped on second and threw to first.

Gregorius, who had been on second base, held up when the ball was hit, in case it was caught. He was late to advance, and first baseman Joey Votto’s throw across the diamond caught him in a rundown. Gregorius was called out for running too wide. Matt Holliday scored.

Cubs 7, White Sox 2 — Willson Contreras homered among his three hits and drove in four runs, Ben Zobrist reached four times from the leadoff spot and John Lackey (7-9) picked up the win despite plunking four batters as the host Cubs beat the hapless White Sox.

Astros 5, Phillies 0 — Charlie Morton (8-4) went seven innings, Jose Altuve extended his hitting streak to 17 games and Derek Fisher drove in two runs in his return from the minors as visiting Houston shut out Philadelphia.

Rangers 10, Marlins 4 — In Arlington, Texas, Joey Gallo homered twice, Mike Napoli and Rougned Odor also went deep, and Texas battered Miami, whose Christian Yelich homered and drove in all four runs.

American League

Rays 5, Orioles 4 — In St. Petersburg, Fla., Tim Beckham’s three-run homer capped a five-run second inning against Wade Miley (4-9) and rookie Jake Faria (51) pitched into the eighth inning to help Tampa Bay snap a five-game losing streak by beating Baltimore.

Blue Jays 4, Athletics 1 — Cesar Valdez (1-0) pitched a career-high six innings to win for the first time since his big league debut more than seven years ago, Ryan Goins drove in two runs and Toronto topped visiting Oakland.

Indians 11, Angels 7 — AL Central-leading Cleveland blew a seven-run secondinning lead, then beat visiting Los Angeles on Edwin Encarnacion’s walkoff grand slam off Bud Norris in the 11th.

Royals 3, Tigers 1 — Whit Merrifield homered on the game’s first pitch and Kansas City went on to win its seventh consecutive game, with Danny Duffy (7-6) silencing Detroit into the seventh.

National League

Brewers 8, Nationals 0 — Travis Shaw, Eric Thames and Manny Pina homered, Zach Davies (12-4) tossed 72/ 3 shutout innings and visiting Milwaukee blanked Washington in a matchup of division leaders.

Giants 11, Pirates 3 — Madison Bumgarner allowed one run in five innings for his first win of the season, Eduardo Nunez drove in two runs before being traded to the Red Sox, and host San Francisco crushed Pittsburgh.

Mets 6, Padres 5 — Yoenis Cespedes had three RBI and finished a single shy of the cycle as New York beat host San Diego for its sixth win in seven games.

Braves 8, Diamondbacks 3— Mike Foltynewicz (9-5) pitched six strong innings, Kurt Suzuki homered twice and Atlanta beat Arizona in Phoenix.

Cardinals 3, Rockies 2 — After Colorado rallied to tie with single runs in the eighth and ninth innings, host St. Louis walked off with the win on Jedd Gyorko’s sacrifice fly.
