Dozen rescued at sea after sailboat capsizes off Cape

- By O’RYAN JOHNSON

A child was pulled from the water unresponsive yesterday when a boat capsized, dumping 12 people into the water off Cape Cod.

The child, who was wearing a life jacket, was taken to Tobey Hospital in Wareham. No further information was available on the child’s condition.

Eleven others were also plucked from the water by the Coast Guard and other boaters, who spotted the boat near Hog Island Channel, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

“A good Samaritan called watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England, at about 4:40 p.m., reporting that an 18-foot sail boat overturned and 12 people were in the water,” the Coast Guard said in a statement. “The good Samaritan also reported the boat appeared to be overloaded with passengers and it was struggling against the waves.”

Coast Guard launched a helicopter from Air Station Cape Cod, as well as a 45-foot boat from Cape Cod Canal.

When the Coast Guard arrived, another boater Samaritan had already taken nine of the 12 on board. Coast Guard and local harbormaster crews recovered the other three.
