NOTEWORTHY

Training camp started with a kickoff that was returned by Dion Lewis, who was also the first to return a kickoff in a later period. He might have the first crack at the job.

Rob Gronkowski got the crowd going during Tom Brady's first 3-on-3 period. He made a pair of nice touchdown catches and then celebrated like a kid who just won the Super Bowl.

Brady's stretch of 14 straight completions began with a 30-yard touchdown up the left sideline to Brandin Cooks, who beat Cyrus Jones and Duron Harmon for the deep ball. Brady and Cooks opened the final period, a two-minute drill, with three straight connections. Brady closed that period with three straight balls to Chris Hogan.

Malcolm Butler was terrific in a number of battles against Cooks, Julian Edelman and Hogan. He only allowed one catch during the practice, and it was for a short gain on a tightly contested throw to Edelman. Butler also kicked inside to the slot on occasion.

Eric Rowe again was the third best cornerback on the team. He did allow a touchdown, but Jonathan Jones and Cyrus Jones (multiple times) were also beaten for scores. Cyrus Jones took a beating from the crowd early in the workout.

After the first 11-on-11 period, which closed with Brady's touchdown pass to Gronk, Bill Belichick and Devin McCourty spent a minute discussing something in the end zone. It looked like a teaching moment, which is notable because even someone as well-versed in the defense as McCourty draws Belichick's tutelage during practice.

Devin Lucien has opened eyes throughout the offseason, and he pulled in a touchdown from Jacoby Brissett when he highpointed a ball over a defensive back in the corner of the end zone.
