Hub reacts: ‘Not enough’

-

Reaction in Boston yesterday to Michelle Carter’s 2 1⁄2- year prison sentence — with half suspended — for encouraging Conrad Roy III’s suicide via text messages was largely that she got off easy.

“I think it might not be enough. I just think she needs to take responsibility.” — SARAH ISELIN, 24, Dorchester

“It's probably not enough. ... I read that she won't be able to profit from this, and that's good. I feel that's more important in the long run.” — CAROLINE BOFFA, 23, North End

“I don't know that I agree that she should be punished at all. … What she did was not a good thing, but I don't know if I agree that legally she should be punished ... seems like a slippery slope to me to say that words killed somebody.” — LIZ SEROTTE, 37, Wellesley

“My initial reaction is that it's not harsh enough. He was reaching out to someone who he trusted and loved and she kind of coerced him ... but she's also young, so I don't know, I have a hard time when they're sentencing young people.” — JORDAN DEEB, 31, Winthrop

“She literally told him to get back in the car, and the fact that she didn't call for help — there was a blurred line. ... Her actions at the end showed that she crossed it, by far.” — GENEVIEVE FRANK, 25, Somerville

“I read the texts and I think that's awful. ... I think it should be more than 2 1⁄ years. She 2 should serve 10. I think she's evil.” — LAUREN McCARTHY, 31, Bridgewater — HERALD STAFF
