Bolt stunned by Gatlin in final 100m race
At the end of a career in which he has dominated his sport for a decade, Usain Bolt was beaten in his final 100-meter race by Justin Gatlin, an American almost five years his senior.
Looking for a golden farewell in his last individual race at the world championships, the 30-year-old was punished for his slow start and Gatlin fought back to nip everyone at the line in London in 9.92 seconds. Christian Coleman took silver in 9.94 while Bolt got bronze in 9.95.
When his victory sank in, Gatlin let out an almighty roar before genuflecting to Bolt. After Gatlin won Olympic 100-meter gold in 2004, Bolt emerged and won an unprecedented three straight Olympic titles, while Gatlin’s career was stopped twice for doping suspensions. . . .
Olympic marathon gold medalist and Maine native Joan Benoit Samuelson finished the 20th Beach to Beacon 10-kilometer race in Cape Elizabeth in 39 minutes, 19 seconds — a U.S. record in her division.
Stephen Kosgei Kibet, of Kenya, bested 2016 winner Ben True by less than a second to win the 6.2mile race in 27 minutes, 54 seconds. Mary Keitany, also of Kenya, won the women’s division for the second consecutive year, in a course record 30:41.
Soccer: Revolution routed in Chicago
Matt Polster scored his first goal of the season in the eighth minute to help the Fire beat the errorprone Revolution 4-1 in Chicago.
Kei Kamara tied it at the 24th minute on a header off a free kick from Lee Nguyen, his fourth goal in his last three matches, but Chicago (12-5-5) completed a threematch season sweep of the Revs (7-10-5) with goals from Juninho, Michael de Leeuw and Luis Solignac. ...
Even before joining Paris Saint-Germain, Neymar was assisting the team. Defender Dani Alves disclosed that he was advised by Neymar to move to the French capital last month — rather than sign for Manchester City — after being released by Juventus.
While Alves made his PSG league debut in a 2-0 victory over Amiens, Neymar is yet to play for the French capital club.
NASCAR: Kyle Busch wins Xfinity race
Kyle Busch won the Xfinity race at Watkins Glen International in New York, recovering from a spinout and a pit road penalty. Busch topped the Penske Racing duo of Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski and easily beat them on a restart with three laps to go for his 90th series win. Watkins Glen International and Pocono were the only tracks currently on the Xfinity schedule where Busch had not won. He’s also won on every track in the Cup series except Charlotte.
Swimming: Lochte fifth in return
In his first USA Swimming-sanctioned event after a 10-month suspension for his behavior at Rio de Janeiro Olympics, Ryan Lochte finished fifth in the men’s 100 meter backstroke final at the U.S. Open in East Meadow, N.Y.
Lochte will swim in the 200 intermediate medley today, where he is the top seed. He has said he is eying a spot on the 2020 Olympic team. Lochte would turn 36 during the 2020 Games in Tokyo.
