Home invasion suspect busted in stolen vehicle
Two Melrose victims assaulted Friday
A man facing attempted murder and mayhem charges in connection with a violent home invasion in Melrose last week was nabbed in Westboro, police said.
John C. Ferreira, 54, of Melrose, was arrested about 12:30 p.m. yesterday after a Westboro cop patrolling a flea market off Route 9 recognized the red Toyota Corolla he was driving as the vehicle authorities say he stole after brutally attacking two female acquaintances, Melrose Police Chief Michael L. Lyle said in a statement.
Ferreira was wanted for allegedly beating the women after breaking into their Vinton Street home Friday and is now facing charges including attempted murder, mayhem, two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of kidnapping causing serious injury, armed assault to rob and larceny of a motor vehicle.
Ferreira was being held last night at the Melrose Police Department pending his arraignment in Malden District Court.
Lyle hailed the quick-thinking Westboro cop who spotted the suspect vehicle yesterday.
“I want to sincerely thank the Westboro Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section and all the state and federal law enforcement agencies that assisted us during our investigation and search for this suspect,” Lyle said.
“This afternoon’s arrest was due to the keen observation skills of the Westboro officer on duty, and we’re thankful that it occurred without incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this difficult time.”
