Harper-less Nats go 1-1

Chris Stratton struck out a career-high 10 in 62⁄3 shutout innings, Joe Panik’s three hits included a two-run single and the San Francisco Giants beat the Nationals, 4-2, yesterday in Washington in Game 1 of a day-night National League doublehead­er.

Washington took Game 2, 6-2, on Howie Kendrick’s walkoff grand slam off Albert Suarez (0-2) with no outs in the 11th inning. The Giants had tied the game in the seventh inning when Pablo Sandoval took Max Scherzer deep for a solo home run.

Before Game 1, Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo announced star slugger Bryce Harper has a significan­t bone bruise in his left knee but no ligament damage, and the NL East leaders are hopeful he’ll return this season. Harper was injured Saturday when he slipped on a wet first base after a three-hour rain delay.

Dodgers 6, Padres 4 — Justin Turner homered twice, Yasmani Grandal also went deep in support of Kenta Maeda (11-4) and majors-best Los Angeles beat visiting San Diego, which extended manager Andy Green’s contract through 2021.

Cubs 7, Diamondbac­ks 2 — In Phoenix, Javier Baez and Ian Happ hit consecutiv­e homers, Kris Bryant homered and scored from second base on a wild pitch, and Chicago beat Arizona to reclaim first place in the NL Central.

Braves 6, Cardinals 3 — R.A. Dickey (8-7) allowed one run in seven innings, Brandon Phillips homered and visiting Atlanta snapped a five-game slide with a win that ended St. Louis’ eightgame winning streak.

Marlins 5, Rockies 3 — Giancarlo Stanton homered for the fourth straight game, hitting his 42nd of the year to tie Gary Sheffield’s franchise’s season record set in 1996, and host Miami completed a sweep of Colorado.

Brewers 7, Reds 4 — Neil Walker had two hits following a Saturday trade from the New York Mets, helping host Milwaukee, which got a homer from Domingo Santana, top Cincinnati.

Mets 6, Phillies 2 — Michael Conforto and Curtis Granderson hit two-run homers to push Chris Flexen (2-1) and visiting New York past Philadelph­ia.

American League

Indians 4, Rays 3 — In St. Petersburg, Fla., Austin Jackson led off the eighth inning with a home run, sending Corey Kluber (11-3) and AL Central-leading Cleveland to the victory against Tampa Bay, whose Steven Souza had tied the game in the sixth with a homer.

Athletics 9, Orioles 3 — Matt Chapman hit a tiebreakin­g three-run homer off Jeremy Hellickson (1-2) in a five-run fourth inning, and host Oakland also got homers from Matt Joyce and Matt Olson to beat Baltimore.

Twins 6, Tigers 4 — Brian Dozier and Miguel Sano homered as visiting Minnesota downed Detroit for its seventh victory in eight games, with Byron Buxton delivering a tiebreakin­g single in the eighth inning.

Royals 14, White Sox 6 — Whit Merrifield homered and had a career-high five RBI, Jorge Bonifacio also homered and Drew Butera had four hits as Kansas City clobbered host Chicago to get back over .500.

Astros 2, Rangers 1 — In Arlington, Texas, Dallas Keuchel (10-2) was sharp, Jose Altuve homered and ALleading Houston stopped its longest losing streak of the season at five games by beating Texas.

Angels 4, Mariners 2 — Parker Bridwell (7-1) won his fifth straight decision and Los Angeles completed a four-game sweep, beating Seattle for a sixth straight victory overall.

Blue Jays 7, Pirates 1 — J.A. Happ (6-8) fanned eight in six dominant innings, Josh Donaldson, Justin Smoak and Darwin Barney all hit home runs, and Toronto topped visiting Pittsburgh.
