Daniel B. Kunhardt, 90, Episcopal priest, Lawrence native
Daniel B. Kunhardt of Brunswick, Maine, an Episcopal priest and Air Force Reserve chaplain, died Aug. 10 at home after a short illness He was 90. A native of Lawrence, Mass., he attended Bowdoin College and General Theological Seminary in New York City, and was ordained an Episcopal priest in 1952.
From 1955 to 1958 he served as a chaplain in the Air Force Reserve, stationed in Roswell, N.M., and Fairbanks, Alaska.
He went on to serve as rector of Episcopal churches in Tacoma, Wash., and Wilbraham, Mass., and on the staff at Christ Church Cathedral in Springfield, Mass.
In 1975 he transitioned out of parish work to follow his calling as a pastoral counselor in the field of alcoholism treatment, serving patients at the Springfield, Mass., city detox and at Beech Hill Hospital in Dublin, N.H.
He retired to Bath, Maine, in 1991 and moved to Brunswick in 2005.
He was predeceased by Margaret Hale Kunhardt in 2004, and is survived by Mary Lou Lavallee, as well as his children, Elizabeth of Worcester, Daniel of Greenfield, Susan of Marlborough, Vt., and Amelia of Winthrop; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, Bath, Maine, with refreshments to follow in the parish hall. Burial will be Sept. 2 at 1 p.m. at Meetinghouse Cemetery on Frost Hill Road in Marlborough, N.H.
