Powerful Yanks blast past Mets

-

Aaron Judge hit a tying home run in the sixth inning, Aaron Hicks and Gary Sanchez went deep in the eighth and the Yankees rallied to beat the Mets, 4-2, last night in the first of four Subway Series matchups this week in New York.

Curtis Granderson and Yoenis Cespedes homered in the third inning off Luis Cessa to give the Mets a 2-0 lead in the interleague matchup at Yankee Stadium.

Sanchez started the Yankees’ comeback with a sacrifice fly in the fourth against starter Rafael Montero. Two innings later, Judge — who struck out looking in the first, his 31st straight game fanning at least once — hit his AL leading 36th home run. It was just his sixth since the All-Star break.

Hicks, who returned last week from an oblique injury, homered against Hansel Robles (7-4) leading off the eighth. Sanchez connected two batters later against Erik Goeddel. With 20 homers, Sanchez matched his total in his rookie season last year.

David Robertson (6-2) pitched a hitless eighth, and Dellin Betances finished a six-hitter for his seventh save, throwing a called third strike past Mets rookie Amed Rosario to end the game with a runner on.

Diamondbacks 2, Astros 0 — Zack Greinke (14-5) struck out nine in six-plus innings to bounce back from his first home loss of the season, lifting Arizona past AL-best Houston.

Greinke struck out AL hitting leader Jose Altuve three times and held the Astros to five hits in 6C innings. Fernando Rodney worked around an infield single in the ninth for his 27th save.

Marlins 8, Giants 3 — Giancarlo Stanton hit his team-record 43rd home run, connecting in his fifth straight game to break the club mark set by Gary Sheffield in 1996 and send host Miami to a fourth straight win, against San Francisco.

Stanton has homered 22 times in his last 34 games, and this one — a two-run drive in the first inning off Ty Blach (8-8) — set another team record for most consecutive games with a dinger.

Marcell Ozuna also homered for Miami and Dee Gordon had three hits to back Adam Conley (5-5).

Cubs 15, Reds 5 — Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo hit back-to-back homers to cap a five-run fourth inning, and Chicago continued its recent dominance of Cincinnati, winning for the 25th time in 32 meetings.

Rockies 3, Braves 0 — In Denver, Chad Bettis threw seven scoreless innings in his return from testicular cancer, and Colorado scored all of its runs in the eighth with the help of an error to beat Atlanta.

Blue Jays 2, Rays 1 — Josh Donaldson hit a home run for the second consecutive game, Nick Tepesch (1-2) won for the first time in almost three years and host Toronto edged runs starved Tampa Bay, which lost for the fourth straight game and only scored on a Wilson Ramos homer.

Orioles 11, Mariners 3 — Tim Beckham hit the first pitch of the game out for his first career leadoff homer, Manny Machado hit the sixth grand slam of his career an inning later, and Baltimore romped in Seattle.

Baltimore pounded Seattle’s pitching, scoring double-digit runs for the second time in three games and the sixth time since the All-Star break.

Royals 6, Athletics 2 — Cam Gallagher hit a grand slam for his first career home run and second big league hit, and Kansas City won in Oakland to moved into a second-place tie with the idle Twins, five games back of AL Central-leading Cleveland.

Rangers 6, Tigers 2 — In Arlington, Texas, Joey Gallo hit his 33rd home run, Rougned Odor had three hits and scored three runs, and Martin Perez (7-10) and Texas beat Detroit.
