Stanton’s HR total up to 44

-

Giancarlo Stanton homered in his sixth consecutive game to give him a majorsleading 44, but the Marlins fell, 9-4, to the San Francisco Giants in National League play last night in Miami.

Stanton hit a solo shot to deep left-center field off Madison Bumgarner in the third inning, tying the game at 2. He has 11 homers in his last 12 games, and 23 in the last 35. Only Sammy Sosa (25 in 1998) and Barry Bonds (24 in 2001) have hit more in that span, according to Elias.

Stanton is two games from tying the major league record of hitting a home run in eight straight set by Dale Long (1956), Don Mattingly (1987), and Ken Griffey Jr. (1993). He is hitting .391 (18-for-46) with 11 home runs and 20 RBI in his last 12 games.

Denard Span had three hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs for the Giants.

Reds 2, Cubs 1 — Scooter Gennett’s sacrifice fly drove in Joey Votto from third to break a scoreless tie in the eighth, and Billy Hamilton singled in a run in the ninth as visiting Cincinnati slipped past Chicago.

Votto was held hitless, but reached base at least twice for the 20th consecutive game to extend his Reds club record.

The Mets put starter Seth Lugo (shoulder) on the 10day disabled list and activated Robert Gsellman (hamstring) to take the turn in the rotation tonight.
