Robert H. Lofgren, 86, physician, of Hingham

Robert H. Lofgren of Hingham, a physician, formerly of Quincy and Needham, died Saturday. He was 86.

He was a graduate of Harvard College and Boston University School of Medicine.

He served in the Air Force as a flight surgeon while living in Texas and New Hampshire.

He was an otolaryngo­logist and was affiliated with Massachuse­tts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Massachuse­tts General and Newton Wellesley hospitals.

Dr. Lofgren’s career spanned more than 50 years and included serving as an assistant clinical professor at Harvard Medical School, chairman of Blue Cross Blue Shield’s Medical Advisory Committee and chairman of Massachuse­tts Eye and Ear Infirmary’s Bylaw Committee.

He moved to Linden Ponds in Hingham in 2004 and was elected to the resident advisory committee and served on many resident committees in Linden Ponds.

Dr. Lofgren had an interest in bagpipes and was associated with the Sutherland Pipe Band of Natick and served on the board of directors and chief steward committee for the New Hampshire Highland Games for almost 30 years.

He fulfilled his passion for U.S. and worldwide travel during his retirement.

Husband of the late Nancy (Kerr), he is survived by his wife Helene (Hawrilenko); two daughters, Susan Lofgren-DePaolo of Porter, Maine, and Jean Lofgren Doherty of Bedford; a son, Peter H. of Chatham; six grandchild­ren and six great-grandchild­ren.

A memorial service will be held at Linden Ponds, Hingham on a later date.

Burial will be private. Arrangemen­ts by McDonald Keohane Funeral Home, Hingham.
