Glowing in the dark

- By GRETTA MONAHAN

Whether you're into taking selfies or not, this week has been one of the most record-breaking in terms of how many people across the country were outside taking pictures of themselves. The reason: the eclipse, of course.

For me, though, this brought up something that's bothered me for a long time about selfie cameras. When lighting isn't good, it ruins the whole thing. As a mom of a newborn, for example, so many of the memories I want to capture and share of me with my little pumpkin happen in the middle of the night. So when I go to enjoy them later, I find they're grainy and look more like dark blobs than recognizable people.

Meanwhile, as a style influencer, the same disappointing and annoying thing happens all too often when I'm trying to take photos of people at parties and events: Without good light, I just can't get the kind of clear, compelling shots I want to share.

So I'm always on the lookout for a good camera light. I did find a few, but some only provided light from the side of the camera (not ideal at all), others run out of batteries way too fast, and still others were big, heavy and bulky — and honestly, what's the point of having such a sleek, cute phone if you're going to weigh it down with an awkward add-on?

So I kept looking for something a little more stylish, and finally found the Moon Selfie light. It provides a perfect amount of light, weighs very little and its tiny beautiful design fits in all my favorite cute clutches. It has customizable brightness and color temperature that I can set easily with my finger, and comes in red, white and slick black. Consider me hooked.

Add to all that coolness that it's a perfect example of some of Boston's best brand-new technology. The Moon Selfie was created by Edward Madongorere and Dishen Yang of Lexington. They're launching it this week — check out their campaign on Kickstarter.com (I'm their fashion/brand expert adviser). There they'll be selling all three colors, plus a special edition of the light: an all-black, limited edition, Lunar Eclipse Moon (which will only be available as a pre-order/pledge during the Kickstarter campaign).

And if you want to see the Moon in action, follow along on my Instagram (@GrettaMonahan) — I'm posting snaps of last night's launch party in New York City.
