Revs shut out at lowly D.C. United

-

The Revolution’s futility on the road continued last night in the nation’s capital.

Luciano Acosta scored off a volley from close range in the 71st minute and D.C. United beat the Revolution, 1-0, last night in a battle between the two worst teams in the Eastern Conference at RFK Stadium in Washington. But United (8-15-4) are now on the upswing thanks to its third straight 1-0 victory, with Bill Hamid (four saves) earning his third consecutive shutout.

Kofi Opare and Lloyd Sam earned assists on the goal, as D.C. extended its unbeaten run against the Revs to seven games (4-0-3).

The Revs fell to 8-12-5 and are seven points back of the last playoff spot in the East. Their road record fell to 0-10-3 as their club record winless skid away from home rose to 15 matches . . . .

Elsewhere in MLS, Tyrone Mears scored in stoppage time to give Atlanta United (10-8-6) a 2-2 tie with the Philadelphia Union (8-12-7) in Chester, Pa., to move into the sixth and final playoff spot in the East . . . .

And in Columbus, Ohio, Ola Kamara and Jonathan Mensah scored second-half goals to lift the Crew (13-12-3) took a 2-1 win over FC Dallas for their fourth straight home victory.

NJ blanks Breakers

Sam Kerr scored her league best 16th goal of the season, tying the NWSL single-season record, and host Sky Blue FC (9-9-2) made that stand up for a 1-0 win over the Breakers last night in Piscataway, N.J.

Kerr latched to a long ball from Nikki Stanton behind the Breakers’ defense. Breakers keeper Abby Smith came outside her penalty area to try and boot the ball away, but she fanned — allowing Kerr to waltz the ball into an empty net in the fifth minute.

It was the only mistake Smith made all night, as she finished with seven saves. Ifeoma Onumonu had a huge first half chance that was blocked, and Rosie White blazed over an open cage in the second half as the Breakers (3-10-7) could not find an equalizer.

Sterling day for City

Raheem Sterling came to Manchester City’s rescue with a stoppage-time winner in a frenzied 2-1 win at Bournemouth, and Manchester United overcame Leicester’s resistance to maintain its perfect English Premier League start yesterday.

Marcus Rashford and Marouane Fellaini struck in the final 20 minutes to seal a 2-0 victory over Leicester to stay top of the table . . . .

Lionel Messi missed a penalty kick but rebounded by scoring his record 350th goal in the Spanish league in Barcelona’s 2-0 win at Alaves. Messi also scored the second in leading the club to its second consecutive victory to start the league . . . .

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had an easy return to action as his Bayern Munich won at Werder Bremen 2-0 in the German Bundesliga, thanks to two goals by Robert Lewandowski . . . .

The limitations of video review were obvious at Genoa and veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon blasted the “ugly” system despite it helping his Juventus to a 4-2 victory in Italy’s Serie A.

Meanwhile, Inter Milan beat Roma 3-1, and Benevento thought it picked up a first ever point in Serie A but the VAR ruled out what would have been a stoppage-time equalizer and it lost to Bologna 1-0.
