Tanaka, Yanks maul Mariners

-

Masahiro Tanaka finally flourished under the sun, Starlin Castro had four hits and the Yankees took advantage of a record five errors by the Seattle Mariners in the first inning on the way to a 10-1 victory yesterday in New York.

Mariners shortstop Jean Segura committed three early miscues — two on one play. Third baseman Kyle Seager and left fielder Ben Gamel also botched balls as the Yankees scored six runs, one earned, in the first inning against starter Andrew Albers.

That made it an unusually easy afternoon for Tanaka (10-10), who entered 0-6 with an 11.81 ERA in seven starts during the day this season. He struck out 10 and walked one in his 100th major league start.

Twins 7, Blue Jays 2 — Byron Buxton homered three times and set a career high with five RBI, helping visiting Minnesota top Toronto.

The Blue Jays host a threegame series with the Red Sox, starting tonight.

Indians 12, Royals 0 — Yan Gomes hit a grand slam to highlight a nine-run second inning as host Cleveland completed a three-game shutout sweep over Kansas City.

The Indians outscored the Royals 20-0 in the series.

White Sox 7, Tigers 1 — Lucas Giolito threw seven scoreless innings to earn his first major league victory, and Matt Davidson homered to help host Chicago down Detroit.

The Tigers have placed designated hitter Victor Martinez on the 10-day disabled list because of an irregular heartbeat, the second time he has landed on the DL this season for the condition.

Athletics 8, Rangers 3 — Texas starter A.J. Griffin gave up back-to-back home runs in the second inning and retired only 10 batters, and host Oakland completed a three-game sweep.

Astros 7, Angels 5 — Brian McCann tripled with the bases loaded in the eighth inning, and visiting Houston handled Los Angeles.

In the nightcap, Sean Doolittle allowed three hits and a run in the top of the ninth before closing out the win for Washington, 5-4.

Phillies 6, Cubs 3 — Bighitting rookie Rhys Hoskins homered for the fifth straight game and made a diving catch to start a gamechanging triple play in the fifth inning, leading host Philadelphia past Chicago.
