Watching the pros is ‘a dream come true’

-

Michael Mirisola, 30, of Billerica was among the thousands of Hub-area gamers who crowded into the TD Garden yesterday to watch the nation’s premier “League of Legends” players show why they’re the best of the best. Mirisola, who attended the event dressed as “Twisted Fate” — a popular character whose weapon of choice is playing cards — told the Herald’s Kathleen McKiernan why he couldn’t turn down the chance to see his favorite players in action.

“I’ve played this game for five years now . ... It’s something where I can feel I can get pulled into this dream world. It’s an escape . ... The professional scene has gotten huge. I love watching the professional scene online.

Having them come from L.A. to Boston is a dream come true . ...

It is a type of sport. People get the impression that esports is not a real sport. It is athletic to a degree. It’s people playing a game most players are not capable of doing. It’s like if you watched baseball. You want to watch the best players play each other . ...

It’s a whole generation. My generation — the millennials — we grew up with video games and we understand it. Our parents didn’t. They don’t get the concept . ...

Now that gaming is online, you can play with people you’d otherwise never meet . ... Watching the finals … will be exciting. The winner will get to go to the world competition, which is like the Super Bowl or the Olympics for this game.”
