Chanticlee­rs run away from UMass

Osharmar Abercrombi­e had 17 carries for 149 yards and two touchdowns last night and Coastal Carolina pulled away from UMass for a 38-28 win in Conway, S.C.

The Chanticlee­rs (0-1) scored 17 straight points in the second half, taking the lead for good at 24-21 on Evan Rabon’s 46-yard field goal with 9:24 left in the third. Tyler Keane added to the lead with a 13-yard TD pass to Chris Jones with 4:48 left in the third and Abercrombi­e scored on a 7-yard run with 3:45 left to play.

Dalton Demos had two TD runs in the first quarter for Coastal Carolina, which never trailed and led 21-14 at halftime.

Andrew Ford threw for 316 yards and a touchdown for the Minutemen (0-2) with Adam Breneman catching nine passes for 126 yards and Andy Isabella hauling in six for 101 yards and a score.

Bryant 49, Merrimack 41 — Prince Wilson threw for 378 yards and four touchdowns to lead the FCS Bulldogs to a comeback win against the Division 2 Warriors in Smithfield, R.I.

Linebacker Jake Ragusa of Canton set up Merrimack’s first score when he intercepte­d Wilson on Bryant’s opening drive. The Warriors took a 7-0 lead when CJ Scarpa of Andover threw a 26yard score to Sebastian Lucas.

Merrimack posted leads of 14-3, 21-10, and as late as 7:37 remaining in the third, owned its largest advantage at 28-12 after Scarpa found Derrick Villard for a 3-yard touchdown pass.

Scarpa was 41-of-73 passing with 469 yards and four TDs. Villard ran for 86 yards and had two rushing scores.

Sacred Heart 42, Stetson 3 — Kevin Duke ran for three touchdowns and threw for another as the Pioneers thumped of the Hatters in Fairfield, Conn.

Stonehill 44, Bloomsburg 28 — Matt Foltz was 22-of-35 for 275 yards with three scoring strikes as the Skyhawks opened the season with a nonleague win over the Huskies in Bloomsburg, Pa.

Foltz also ran for a score as teammate Brian Kearns rushed 24 times for 136 yards with a touchdown. Andrew Jamiel of Yarmouth caught seven passes for 120 yards with a touchdown.

Assumption 31, Kutztown 28 — The legs of running back Dylan Oxsen of Plymouth and kicker Cole Tracy carried the Greyhounds to a nonleague Division 2 win over the Golden Bears in Kutztown, Pa. Tracy’s 24-yard field goal with 18 seconds to play broke a 28-28 tie. Oxen had 34 of his 144 yards on the winning drive. Ashton Grant added 136 receiving yards for Assumption.

Shippensbu­rg 41, AIC 7 — Kwame Jarvis threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Tommy Smith for the Yellow Jackets’ only points in a loss to the powerful Red Raiders in Shippensbu­rg, Pa.

Framingham State 41, Endicott 10 — Quron Wright of Worcester carried the ball 22 times and gained 169 rushing yards for the Rams in a win over the Gulls in Beverly. Rufus Rushins of Lynn scored a pair of TDs for the Rams and Mike Calicchio of Chelmsford hauled in two TD passes among his five receptions for 101 yards.

Buffalo State 20, Bridgewate­r State 19 — A 34-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Hoppy to Ricky Bailey midway through the fourth quarter lifted the Bengals to a tight nonleague win over the Bears in Buffalo, N.Y.

For the Bears, Jack Lavanchy of Walpole caught a 9-yard scoring strike from Stefano D’Emilia of Bridgewate­r. Jonathan Marrero of Boston split time with D’Emilia at quarterbac­k as they threw for a combined 158 yards. Marrero rushed for a touchdown. Brandon Giles had a TD catch for the Bears.

Springfiel­d College 35, Western New England 21 — Fullback Jordan Wilcox and quarterbac­k Jake Eglintine drove the Pride on offense during a win over the Golden Bears in Springfiel­d.

Salve Regina 35, Worcester State 28 — Charlie Connell had two intercepti­ons of the Seahawks’ four intercepti­ons and returned the first 9 yards for a touchdown during a season-opening victory over the Lancers in Middletown, R.I.

Lancers quarterbac­k Noah Brum threw 47 passes and completed 30 for 373 yards with four touchdown tosses, but the turnovers proved costly.

Worcester State’s Jacob Maher of Marshfield had four catches for 136 yards with touchdown grabs of 10 and 67 yards. Dan Orlando of Westboro had a scoring catch among his 10 receptions for 118 yards.

For Salve Regina, Danny McDermott of Franklin passed for 184 yards and two scores.
