Astros sweep home return

George Springer had three hits, Josh Reddick and Marwin Gonzalez added RBI singles in a four-run sixth inning, and the Houston Astros beat the New York Mets, 4-1, last night to sweep a daynight doublehead­er in their first games at home since the city was devastated by Hurricane Harvey.

The Astros won the first game 12-8 behind Springer’s career-high 30th home run. Mets starter Matt Harvey, in his first start since June 14, was pounded for seven runs and eight hits in a careerlow two innings as Houston romped to a 7-0 lead.

In the nightcap, Reddick tied it at 1 with an RBI single with no outs in the sixth before Jose Altuve avoided Kevin Plawecki’s tag at home to score on Gonzalez’ single.

American League

Blue Jays 7, Orioles 2 — Josh Donaldson hit a pivotal three-run homer and Toronto deftly recovered from a second-inning injury to starting pitcher Marcus Stroman to win in Baltimore.

Stroman was struck on the right elbow by a Mark Trumbo liner and left the game. The injury was later diagnosed as a contusion, and Xrays were negative.

White Sox 5, Rays 4 — Chris Archer gave up home runs to the first two batters of the game then left due to right lateral forearm tightness, as host Chicago beat Tampa Bay.

Logan Morrison hit his 35th homer of the season in the sixth for the Rays, who had won eight of 11.

Twins 17, Royals 0 — In Minneapoli­s, Joe Mauer went 4-for-4 with two RBI and Eduardo Escobar hit two homers and drove in six, as Minnesota blasted Kansas City.

Angels 7, Rangers 4 — In Arlington, Texas, Kole Calhoun hit a tiebreakin­g tworun single in the 10th inning, and Los Angeles rallied to beat Texas to stay 11⁄2 games behind Minnesota for the second AL wild card berth.

Indians 5, Tigers 2 — Corey Kluber pitched eight strong innings and Cleveland won its 10th straight game with a victory in Detroit.

The Tigers were missing Miguel Cabrera, Alex Wilson and manager Brad Ausmus. All three were serving the first game of suspension­s stemming from an Aug. 24 brawl with the New York Yankees.

National League

Nationals 3, Brewers 2 — Trea Turner’s double to the center field wall scored Wilmer Difo from first base in the eighth, and Washington rallied to win in Milwaukee despite Max Scherzer being lifted after five innings.

Scherzer was hit on the left calf by a liner from Milwaukee’s Travis Shaw in the first inning.

Cubs 14, Braves 12 — Rene Rivera hit a grand slam, Anthony Rizzo added a threerun triple and host Chicago held off Atlanta in Jon Lester’s return from the disabled list to win its sixth straight.

Padres 6, Dodgers 5 — Yangervis Solarte blasted a walkoff homer off Pedroa Baez with one out in the ninth as San Diego handed Los Angeles its sixth loss in its last seven games, in the first game of a doublehead­er.

Marlins 10, Phillies 9 — Giancarlo Stanton hit his major league-leading 52nd home run and host Miami held on to beat Philadelph­ia, which got another homer from Rhys Hoskins before he was hit on the right wrist and removed in the seventh.

Diamondbac­ks 6, Rockies 2 — In Denver, Patrick Corbin pitched effectivel­y into the sixth, J.D. Martinez hit a three-run homer and Arizona beat Colorado for its ninth straight win.

Giants 2, Cardinals 1 — Nick Hundley hit a gameending homer in the 10th, and host San Francisco beat St. Louis despite eight shutout innings from Lance Lynn.

Pirates 5, Reds 0 — Jordan Luplow picked up the first two hits of his career, including a three-run homer in the eighth, to help host Pittsburgh beat Cincinnati.
