Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 yesterday in New York.

The 30-year-old Russian finished with 51 unforced errors, compared to 14 for Sevastova, who will next face Sloane Stephens. The unseeded American reached her first quarterfin­al in New York by eliminatin­g No.30 Julia Goerges 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

Sharapova’s exit leaves Venus Williams as the only past U.S. Open champion in the women’s field. The 37-yearold got to the quarterfin­als by beating Carla Suarez Navarro 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Next for Williams is a showdown with No. 13 Petra Kvitova, who eliminated reigning Wimbledon champ Garbine Muguruza 7-6 (3), 6-3.

On the men’s side, No.17 Sam Querrey became the first U.S. male quarterfin­alist in New York since 2011 by easily beating No.23 Mischa Zverev 6-2, 6-2, 6-1. Also, 18-year-old Canadian Denis Shapovalov’s entertaini­ng stay ended with a 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3) loss to 12thseeded Pablo Carreno Busta.

Uihlein earns card

New Bedford-native Peter Uihlein won the Web.com Tour Finals-opening Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championsh­ip in Columbus, Ohio, to earn a PGA Tour card, closing with a 6-underpar 65 on Ohio State’s Scarlet Course to beat former Buckeyes player Ryan Armour by a stroke.

Uihlein earned $180,000 to wrap up a PGA Tour card as a top-25 finisher in the fourevent series. The 28-year-old who grew up in Mattapoise­tt has played four seasons on the European Tour.

“Right now, I don’t know where I’m going to be playing, but I’m going to try and do both and see what happens,” Uihlein said after finishing at 14-under 270 . . . .

Stacy Lewis won the Cambia Portland (Ore.) Classic, with her $195,000 in winnings going to the relief efforts in her hometown of Houston. Her sponsor, KMPG, also pledged to match the donation.

She won her 12th LPGA Tour title and first since June 2014, ending a frustratin­g stretch that included 12 runner-up finishes. She closed with a 3-under 69 for a 20-under 268 total to hold off In Gee Chun by a stroke . ...

Scott McCarron won the Shaw Charity Classic in Calgary, Alberta, for his fourth PGA Tour Champions title of the season, closing with a 3-under 67 to beat Miguel Angel Jimenez by a stroke at Canyon Meadows.

The 52-year-old McCarron matched Bernhard Langer for the season victory lead and earned $352,500 to pull closer to the idle German in the Charles Schwab Cup season standings.

Rossi wins at Glen

Pole-sitter Alexander Rossi won the IndyCar Grand Prix at The Glen, holding off Scott Dixon over the closing laps at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) Internatio­nal.

The race for the IndyCar title tightened significan­tly with one race left in the season. Points leader Josef Newgarden started third and remained in contention until a crash exiting the pits ruined his day. He finished 18th, two laps down. Dixon cut Newgarden’s 31-point lead to three as the series heads to the road course at Sonoma for the double-points finale . . . .

Lewis Hamilton won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza virtually unchalleng­ed from pole position and moved ahead of Sebastian Vettel, who finished third, to take the lead in the drivers’ standings.

Josh Jackson passed for 235 yards, ran for 101 and accounted for two touchdowns in his first start for Virginia Tech as the No. 21 Hokies made a last-second stand to beat No.22 West Virginia, 3124, in Landover, Md . ...
