No no-no, but Rays still win

-

Manny Machado hit a two-run homer off Dellin Betances with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, capping a comeback that lifted the Orioles past the New York Yankees, 7-6, last night in Baltimore.

Betances (3-6) retired the first two batters in the ninth before Tim Beckham walked. Machado then drove a 1-0 pitch far over the center-field wall to provide the Orioles an unlikely victory after New York scored six runs in the third.

It was Machado’s second homer of the game and team-high 32nd of the season. Jonathan Schoop and Mark Trumbo also went deep for the Orioles, who closed within a half-game of Minnesota for the second AL wild card. Zach Britton (20), Baltimore’s sixth reliever, worked the ninth.

Meanwhile, the loss dropped the Yankees 31⁄2 games behind the Red Sox in the AL East.

The start of the game was delayed by rain for 2 hours, 14 minutes. A good portion of the announced crowd of 14,377 stuck around, and for the Orioles fans it proved worth the wait.

Rays 2, Twins 1 — Jake Odorizzi took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in front of a tiny home crowd, and Tampa Bay beat Minnesota in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Lucas Duda homered and drove in both runs for the Rays, who improved to .500 on the season and got within two games of Minnesota for the second AL wild card.

Indians 9, White Sox 4 — Jose Ramirez hit two more homers, Austin Jackson also connected and visiting Cleveland beat Chicago for their 13th straight victory, the longest run by a major league team this season.

Astros 3, Mariners 1 — Cameron Maybin homered with one out in the seventh inning to break up host Seattle’s attempt at a combined no-hitter, and Houston held on for victory.

Maybin’s two-run shot came off reliever Emilio Pagan, Seattle’s third pitcher after starter Ariel Miranda tossed six hitless innings but threw 112 pitches.

Tigers 13, Royals 2 — JaCoby Jones and John Hicks hit two home runs and host Detroit had six homers in all in a victory over Kansas City.

Tigers starter Anibal Sanchez threw only five pitches and was knocked out of the game in the first inning after getting hit by Whit Merrifield’s single in the right leg.
