Sooners strike down Buckeyes

- BOOMER SOONER: Oklahoma quarterbac­k Baker Mayfield drops back to pass against Ohio State last night in Columbus, Ohio.

Baker Mayfield threw for 386 yards and three touchdowns as No. 5 Oklahoma pulled ahead in the second half to knock off No. 2 Ohio State, 31-16, last night in Columbus, Ohio, to give firstyear head coach Lincoln Riley an early signature victory.

Mayfield was sharp, hitting 27-of-35 passes and tossing TD passes to Dimitri Flowers, Lee Morris and Trey Sermon.

Alabama 41, Fresno State 10 — Jalen Hurts ran for 154 yards and two touchdowns and passed for a third score as the No. 1 Crimson Tide routed the Bulldogs in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Alabama (2-0) polished off 44-point underdog Fresno State (1-1) with a workmanlik­e performanc­e on the heels of an opening victory over No. 10 Florida State in Atlanta.

Clemson 14, Auburn 6 — Kelly Bryant ran for two touchdowns after getting knocked hard to the ground and defensive end Austin Bryant had four of the No. 3 Tigers’ 11 sacks in a victory over the visiting Tigers.

This was billed as an early showcase between elite teams with dreams of the College Football Playoffs. Instead, Clemson’s Bryant never gave Auburn (1-1) much of a chance.

Penn State 33, Pittsburgh 14 — Trace McSorley threw for three touchdowns, including Saquon Barkley’s 46-yard catchand-run, and the No. 4 Nittany Lions pulled away from the Panthers in State College, Pa.

McSorley completed 15of-28 passes for 164 yards, helping Penn State (2-0) avenge a loss to its in-state rivals a year ago. Tight end Mike Gesicki had two touchdown receptions and Barkley ran for 88 yards as Penn State ended a twogame skid against the Panthers.

Southern Cal 42, Stanford 14 — Steven Mitchell and Deontay Burnett caught two touchdown passes apiece from Sam Darnold, and the No. 6 Trojans extended their winning streak to 11 games with a bruising victory over the No. 14 Cardinal in Los Angeles.

Darnold went 21-of-26 with 316 yards passing for the Trojans (2-0, 1-0 Pac12), who snapped their three-game losing streak to Stanford (1-1, 0-1).

Washington 63, Montana 7 — Dante Pettis weaved his way 67 yards for the seventh punt return touchdown of his career, Jake Browning threw for 259 yards and two touchdowns, and the No. 7 Huskies rolled in Seattle.

Michigan 36, Cincinnati 14 — Ty Isaac ran for a career-high 133 yards and Wilton Speight threw two touchdowns to help the No. 8 Wolverines knock off the Bearcats (1-1) in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Wisconsin 31, Florida Atlantic 14 — Freshman Jonathan Taylor ran for 223 yards and three touchdowns, Alex Hornibrook threw for 201 yards and a score, and the No. 9 Badgers defeated the Owls in Madison, Wis.

LSU 45, Chattanoog­a 10 — Derrius Guice ran for 102 yards and two touchdowns, D.J. Chark returned a punt 65 yards for a score, and the No. 12 Tigers overcame bouts of sloppiness to win in Baton Rouge, La.

Georgia 20, Notre Dame 19 — Lorenzo Carter and Davin Bellamy led a swarming defense and the No. 15 Bulldogs got just enough plays from an offense starting a freshman quarterbac­k to beat the No. 24 Fighting Irish in South Bend, Ind.

Rodrigo Blankenshi­p kicked a 30-yard field goal with 3:39 remaining to give the Bulldogs (2-0) a one-point lead, and that was enough for Carter and company.

Louisville 47, North Carolina 35 — Reigning Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson accounted for 525 total yards and six touchdowns to help the No. 17 Cardinals pull away late in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Jackson threw for 393 yards and three scores while also running for 132 yards and three touchdowns. The last came on a spinning-through-tacklers 11-yard run with 3:06 left to punctuate a dominant fourth-quarter effort by the Cardinals.

Virginia Tech 27, Delaware 0 — Greg Stroman returned a punt for a touchdown and Josh Jackson threw two scoring passes to carry the No. 18 Hokies past the Fightin’ Blue Hens in Blacksburg, Va.

Kansas State 55, Charlotte 7 — Safety Kendall Adms reached the end zone twice in the first half returning an intercepti­on and fumble for touchdowns to lead the No. 19 Wildcats in Manhattan, Kan.

TCU 28, Arkansas 7 — Darius Anderson ran for a career-high 106 yards and a touchdown and the No. 23 Horned Frogs’ defense dominated the Razorbacks in Fayettevil­le, Ark.

Tennessee 42, Indiana State 7 — Ty Chandler returned the opening kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown, Carlin Fils-aime had two scoring runs and the No. 25 Volunteers breezed in Knoxville, Tenn.
