H-W shuts down Fenwick

- By BRIAN ROACH Marcello Rossetti and Kevin Barrucci contributed to this report.

Pitching a shutout is difficult to do in any sport, especially football.

Hamilton-Wenham did just that yesterday in Hamilton with a 21-0 victory over Bishop Fenwick in what could be a playoff matchup in Division 6 North this season.

“We knew we were playing them without their quarterback (Corey Bright) and it was good for us,” said H-W coach Jim Pugh. “Not so good for them, but that didn’t take away from how physical the defense played today. We were hitting people and making tackles. It was a good win for us.”

The Generals defense allowed just 84 total yards in the first half and only 30 yards to the starters in the second half in what was a strong display of strength and quickness, capped by an Anthony Pallazola interception with 1:51 to go in the contest.

“I feel like we were especially physical today,” said senior wideout Jake Lanciani. “We talked about all week that we haven’t beat (Fenwick) in five or six years and we were just really physical. We just had a really big drive to win today.”

Lanciani was one of many bright spots for the H-W offense, as he started off the scoring with a leaping 29yard touchdown grab of Billy Whelan’s throw to cap a six-play drive with 1:12 to go in the first quarter.

Lanciani wasn’t done, as he added a 38-yard catchand-run, with an unsportsmanlike penalty tacking on 15 yards. Two plays later, senior Andrew Riccio (nine carries, 49 yards) ran it in from 6 yards out for a 14-0 lead with 1:20 left in the first half.

Hamilton-Wenham put the game away at the start of the second half with a nine-play drive that took 4:38. This time, Whelan (7of-12, 156 yards) kept it and scrambled to the left for a 2-yard score to push the lead to 21-0. In other action yesterday: Robbie Sarmanian had a huge day, rushing for 213 yards and five touchdowns on 18 carries to power Manchester Essex to a 46-34 nonleague victory over Northeast. Zach Sanderson ran for 216 yards and three TDs for Northeast.

Luke Cloud’s second touchdown pass of the game, a 2-yarder to Lejaun Pope with two seconds left, gave Newton South a 20-19 victory over Winchester . . . . Jack Tishman threw for 165 yards and three scores as Wellesley defeated Concord-Carlisle, 27-13. Hugh Callahan caught a pair of TD passes and picked off a pass for the Raiders . ... Joseph Clark led the charge with three rushing touchdowns as Brookline cruised past Boston Latin, 41-14.

Mike Yarin threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran for a third as St. John’s Prep shut out Haverhill, 27-0.

Colin Frary threw for 207 yards and four touchdowns as Swampscott defeated Greater Lawrence, 43-0.

In a Northeastern Conference crossover game, Matt Severance tossed two TD passes to Prince Brown and ran for two more as Lynn English edged Beverly, 26-20.

Domenick Georgakakis and Kyle Lambiase each ran for a touchdown to lead South Shore past Holbrook/ Avon, 14-6 . . . . Joe Krochko recorded 78 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries, while D.J. Doncaster finished with 12 tackles as Sacred Heart shut out Old Colony, 20-0.
