Frelick KOs Boxers
LEXINGTON — Sal Frelick wasn’t even born the last time Lexington squared off against and lost to Brockton in the 1984 Super Bowl.
Yesterday, the Minutemen’s senior quarterback put on a performance against the visiting Boxers that went a long way to softening the blow from that loss 33 years ago, as Lexington blitzed Brockton, 42-28.
Frelick was unstoppable. He finished with 182 yards passing and 190 yards rushing. He threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more, including a backbreaking 63-yard scamper after the Boxers had cut a 35-14 fourth quarter deficit down to seven points with just under three minutes left to play.
“We talk all the time about starting fast, and to get out on a team like (Brockton), one of the most storied programs in the history of Massachusetts, gave us some confidence and got us rolling,” said Lexington coach George Peterson. “We give Sal the freedom to do a lot of things because he is an explosion waiting to happen.”
On his first drive, Frelick connected with junior Anthony Bianchi for a 7-yard score. After Brockton was forced to punt, Frelick handed the ball over to senior running back Ben Quint.
A 1,000-yard rusher last year in just eight games, Quint ripped off a 49-yard scoring run to make it 14-0, and added a 30-yarder on their next possession to make it 21-0 after one quarter.
A Frelick to Quint 19-yard TD pass later in the second quarter made it 28-0.
Brockton (0-1) finally got on track late in the half on Jaylynn Ellerbe Cundiff’s 9-yard TD run. After a scoreless third, Boxers quarterback Jose Monteiro connected with Dimitri Dorinvil for a 19-yard TD to make it 28-14 early in the fourth.
But Frelick responded again with a 23-yard touchdown run to push the lead back to three scores. After the Boxers scored 14 quick points late in the fourth quarter to make it a onescore game, Frelick broke off a 63-yard TD run to put it out of reach.
“This was a huge win against a great team,” said Frelick. “We had this game circled all offseason and to come out on opening day and get the win is an accomplishment.”
