CAST TO GET BOSTON ‘STRONGER’
Bauman flick set for fete at hospital
Roll out the red carpet, because the Boston premiere of “Stronger” is slated to go down at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Charlestown this evening.
While we’re amped about catching the new flick, which is based on Boston Marathon bombing survivor Jeff Bauman’s book, we’re equally as excited about the guest list.
Expected to stroll up to the screening: the film’s stars, Jake Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany; director David Gordon Green, writer John Pollono, singer James Taylor, Boston Celtics Gordon Hayward and Al Horford; Josiah “Joe” Spaulding, president of the Citi Performing Arts Center; former Miss Universe Amelia Vega, Boston police Commissioner Billy Evans and Boston EMS Chief Jim Hooley.
The real star, Bauman, is of course planning on attending the event — as is his wife Erin Hurley (the couple split during the shooting of the film).
We know what you’re thinking: A hospital isn’t your typical venue for a Hollywood premiere. The locale has much meaning, though: It’s where Bauman embarked on his journey toward recovery. Which is also why you’ll be spotting the Spaulding center in the film itself.
As you probably know by now, Gyllenhaal plays Bauman, a charmingly scrappy 27-year-old Bostonian who’s had a history of not following through when it came to his relationship. On April 15, 2013, he finally decided to show up to the marathon in hopes of winning back his ex-girlfriend Erin (played by Maslany), who was running in the world-famous race.
While waiting for her at the finish line — sign and all — a terrorist bomb went off next to him. Bauman lost both of his legs and was left to endure the physical and emotional tolls ahead of him.
“Stronger” has already had its world premiere at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival last week. People are starting to toss around the O-word, hinting that Gyllenhaal’s performance as Bauman could earn him his first Oscar-nomination since 2006’s “Brokeback Mountain.”
While local VIPs get to see “Stronger” tonight, the flick hits theaters for the rest of us Sept. 22.
In the meantime, just try watching the trailer without shedding a tear.
