Man who lost mom at sea to represent self in inheritance battle

-

Nathan Carman, who was rescued at sea after his mother disappeared on a fishing trip last year, plans to represent himself in a legal attempt by his aunts to declare him a killer and bar him from receiving an inheritance from his murdered grandfather’s estate.

Carman filed a one-page document in New Hampshire court late last week notifying the court that he will represent himself, the Hartford Courant reported.

Carman’s aunts want the court to prevent him from getting any of the estimated $40 million estate of their father, John Chakalos. The petition claims Carman shot and killed Chakalos in his Windsor home in 2013.

The aunts’ sister, Nathan’s mother Linda Carman, disappeared last September when Nathan’s boat, the Chicken Pox, sank on a fishing trip. Nathan Carman is in line to collect his mother’s share of the Chakalos estate.

Nathan Carman was rescued eight days later by a passing freighter off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard after being spotted floating in an emergency raft.

Carman does have lawyers representing him in a Rhode Island federal lawsuit by the company that insured his boat that sank last September, the Courant reported.

Nathan Carman already has access to a $400,000 joint account that was once owned by him, Chakalos and Linda Carman, according to the petition. Nathan is now the sole owner of that account.
