Cathedral gets quick call

Given the way the early results came in, I was looking at the very real possibility of starting the Pickorama season below .500 for the first time.

I figured coach Brian Lee’s Baby Boomers at King Philip would have opening night jitters against an experienced North Attleboro squad. By the end of the game, the only one shaking was me. OK, no one is perfect. Since one defending Super Bowl champion won its opener, there was reason for optimism that two of the other picks, Millis and Duxbury, would follow King Philip’s lead.

No such luck as Bridgewater-Raynham and Holliston turned in terrific second-half efforts on the road to emerge victorious. Those three setbacks sent me on the way to a 7-3 first week.

On to Week 2 (Home team in CAPS):

Cathedral over BRIGHTON: Panthers might have a little too much in the speed department.

BILLERICA over Andover: Indians get out of the gate fast with two wins.

MANSFIELD over Braintree: Hornets are one of many contenders in Division 2 South.

Bridgewater-Raynham over XAVERIAN: Trojans make it two in a row on the road against ranked teams.

Everett over LEOMINSTER: Crimson Tide maintain their stranglehold on the top spot in the Sweet 16.

Holliston over LINCOLNSUDBURY: I paid the price for going against Kiley’s Krew. Not again.

BC HIGH over Marshfield: Eagles get the home nod here.

CENTRAL CATHOLIC over St. John’s Prep: Raiders more balanced on both sides of the ball.

Natick over NEWTON NORTH: Redhawks rely on a ground attack to take home a win.

TEWKSBURY over Methuen: Get the sense the Redmen will step up their game this weekend. Last week’s record: 7-3 Season to date: 7-3
