Cathedral rallies back

Headen leads way in second half

- By BRIAN ROACH

Big plays and forced turnovers can spark a comeback. Cathedral had both of those last night.

Cathedral rallied from a twopoint hole at the break to upend nonleague opponent Brighton, 42-20, at Daly Field. The Panthers scored 24 unanswered points in the second half.

“It’s a good win for our program for sure,” said Cathedral coach Paul Sobolewski.

Khamal Headen scored all three touchdowns in the second half for Cathedral (2-0), including a 70-yard fumble return to make it 34-20 in the third quarter.

“Khamal just made that play,” said Sobolewski. “I thought that really coming out of the half that was really good for us (to get those two quick scores).”

Headen gave his team the lead early in the third with a 63-yard rushing score, then sealed the deal with a 5-yard touchdown run to make it 42-20 late in the fourth.

In the first half, Brighton ruled all facets of the game and built a 14-8 lead late into the first quarter with a 70-yard kickoff return touchdown for senior Jerrod Clark.

The Bengals made it 20-10 with less than a minute left in the first half as junior Patrick Bynoe found senior Quincy Taylor for a 34-yard score. The two-point conversion was fumbled, and Cathedral’s Chris Carmona returned it for points the other way.

Cathedral answered on the next play from scrimmage with the second rushing touchdown for Khalil Blair, a 65-yarder to make it 20-18.

“Blair is just a playmaker and when we need a big play — he makes it,” Sobolewski said. “That play he made at the end of the first half was really the turning point. It goes from 20-10 to 20-18 just like that.”

His first TD knotted the score 8-8 early in the first from 48 yards out after Brighton went up on a 2-yard touchdown run by Erick Brown. Blair also snatched an interception to seal the win with a little over two minutes left in the contest.
