Pujals derails UNH yet again

QB throws 5 TD passes, Holy Cross rolls to win

Peter Pujals threw five touchdown passes and Holy Cross pummeled New Hampshire, 51-26, in a nonconfere­nce battle yesterday in Worcester.

A year ago Pujals set a school record by connecting on 42-of-64 pass attempts for three TDs against UNH.

This time, he connected on just 21-of-39 attempts for 367 yards but it was more than enough to derail the Wildcats (2-1, 1-0 Colonial Athletic Associatio­n).

Trevor Knight got UNH on the board with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Neil O’Connor.

Holy Cross answered with the first of A.J. Wells’ three first-half field goals, this one from 46 yards out.

Pujals hit Martin Dorsey from 14 yards to give the Crusaders (2-1, 1-0 Patriot) the lead for good. Wells added field goals from 29 and 37 yards to make it 16-7 at the half.

Pujals capped his day with an 86-yard scoring strike to Dorsey to make it 51-19 with 6:43 left.

Virginia 38, Connecticu­t 18 — Kurt Benkert passed for a schoolreco­rd breaking 455 yards and the Cavaliers (2-1) avenged a heartbreak loss last season with a victory over the Huskies (1-1) in Charlottes­ville, Va.

Yale 56, Lehigh 28 — Kurt Rawlings threw for four touchdowns, Zane Dudek ran for two scores, and the Bulldogs opened their season with a win over Lehigh to take the Yank Townsend Trophy from the Mountain Hawks (0-3) in Bethlehem, Pa.

Rawlings hit Melvin Rouse II on a 37-yard TD pass on the Bulldogs’ opening drive, and later found him for a 31-yard TD pass in the third quarter to make it 34-21. Rawlings was 20-of-26 for 308 yards passing, with a 43-yard TD pass to Christophe­r Williams-Lopez and an 11-yarder to JP Shohfi.

The Bulldogs converted two turnovers into scores and broke the game open on Rawlings’ TD pass to Shohfi after Ryan Burke recovered Brad Mayes’ fumble on the Lehigh 25.

Dudek rushed for 131 yards on nine carries, scoring on a 69-yard run for the Bulldogs in the third and on a 29-yarder in the fourth.

Brown 28, Bryant 23 — Nick Duncan rushed for a pair of touchdowns and threw for one as the Bears (1-0) handled the Bulldogs (1-2) in Providence, R.I.

Bryant’s Price Wilson went 37-of-54 for 387 yards with two touchdowns, setting single-game school marks for completion­s, attempts and yards.

Stony Brook 45, Sacred Heart 7 — Joe Carbone threw for three touchdowns to lead the Seawolves (2-1) to a win over the Pioneers (2-1) in Stony Brook, N.Y.

Dartmouth 38, Stetson 7 — Jack Heneghan threw for 71 yards and a touchdown as the Big Green (10) cruised past the Hatters (0-3) in Deland, Fla.

Bentley 17, Merrimack 7 — Junior Nick Athy of Holliston and sophomore Derek Perkins of Milton each had an intercepti­on and sophomore Quintin McDermott of Franklin picked off two passes for the Falcons (2-1, 2-0) in a Northeast 10 Conference win over the Warriors (1-2, 1-1) in North Andover.

Martin Bannerman Jr. ran for a pair of Bentley touchdowns but the Falcons mostly relied on a bendbut-don’t break defense, which recovered a fumble along with picking off Merrimack quarterbac­k CJ Scarpa of Andover four times.

Scarpa did throw for 387 yards and teammate Cody Demers of Dracut gained 114 yards in that total with seven receptions.

LIU Post 51, Stonehill 16 — Yianni Gavalas completed 35-of43 passes for 405 yards and four scores as the defending Northeast 10 champion Pioneers (30) blasted the Skyhawks (1-2) in Brookville, N.Y.

New Haven 23, Saint Anselm 7 — Ajee Patterson connected on 19-of29 passes for 307 yards with a pair of scoring strikes to Devin Martin as the Chargers (2-1) topped the Hawks (0-3) in Manchester, N.H.
