QB throws 5 TD passes, Holy Cross rolls to win

Peter Pu­jals threw five touch­down passes and Holy Cross pum­meled New Hamp­shire, 51-26, in a non­con­fer­ence bat­tle yes­ter­day in Worces­ter.

A year ago Pu­jals set a school record by con­nect­ing on 42-of-64 pass at­tempts for three TDs against UNH.

This time, he con­nected on just 21-of-39 at­tempts for 367 yards but it was more than enough to de­rail the Wild­cats (2-1, 1-0 Colo­nial Ath­letic As­so­ci­a­tion).

Trevor Knight got UNH on the board with a 6-yard touch­down pass to Neil O’Con­nor.

Holy Cross an­swered with the first of A.J. Wells’ three first-half field goals, this one from 46 yards out.

Pu­jals hit Martin Dorsey from 14 yards to give the Cru­saders (2-1, 1-0 Pa­triot) the lead for good. Wells added field goals from 29 and 37 yards to make it 16-7 at the half.

Pu­jals capped his day with an 86-yard scor­ing strike to Dorsey to make it 51-19 with 6:43 left.

Vir­ginia 38, Con­necti­cut 18 — Kurt Benkert passed for a school­record break­ing 455 yards and the Cava­liers (2-1) avenged a heart­break loss last sea­son with a vic­tory over the Huskies (1-1) in Char­lottesville, Va.

Yale 56, Le­high 28 — Kurt Rawl­ings threw for four touch­downs, Zane Dudek ran for two scores, and the Bull­dogs opened their sea­son with a win over Le­high to take the Yank Townsend Tro­phy from the Moun­tain Hawks (0-3) in Beth­le­hem, Pa.

Rawl­ings hit Melvin Rouse II on a 37-yard TD pass on the Bull­dogs’ opening drive, and later found him for a 31-yard TD pass in the third quarter to make it 34-21. Rawl­ings was 20-of-26 for 308 yards pass­ing, with a 43-yard TD pass to Christo­pher Wil­liams-Lopez and an 11-yarder to JP Sho­hfi.

The Bull­dogs con­verted two turnovers into scores and broke the game open on Rawl­ings’ TD pass to Sho­hfi af­ter Ryan Burke re­cov­ered Brad Mayes’ fum­ble on the Le­high 25.

Dudek rushed for 131 yards on nine car­ries, scor­ing on a 69-yard run for the Bull­dogs in the third and on a 29-yarder in the fourth.

Brown 28, Bryant 23 — Nick Dun­can rushed for a pair of touch­downs and threw for one as the Bears (1-0) han­dled the Bull­dogs (1-2) in Prov­i­dence, R.I.

Bryant’s Price Wil­son went 37-of-54 for 387 yards with two touch­downs, set­ting sin­gle-game school marks for com­ple­tions, at­tempts and yards.

Stony Brook 45, Sa­cred Heart 7 — Joe Car­bone threw for three touch­downs to lead the Sea­wolves (2-1) to a win over the Pioneers (2-1) in Stony Brook, N.Y.

Dart­mouth 38, Stet­son 7 — Jack Heneghan threw for 71 yards and a touch­down as the Big Green (10) cruised past the Hat­ters (0-3) in Deland, Fla.

Bent­ley 17, Mer­ri­mack 7 — Ju­nior Nick Athy of Hol­lis­ton and sopho­more Derek Perkins of Mil­ton each had an in­ter­cep­tion and sopho­more Quintin McDer­mott of Franklin picked off two passes for the Fal­cons (2-1, 2-0) in a North­east 10 Con­fer­ence win over the War­riors (1-2, 1-1) in North An­dover.

Martin Ban­ner­man Jr. ran for a pair of Bent­ley touch­downs but the Fal­cons mostly re­lied on a bend­but-don’t break de­fense, which re­cov­ered a fum­ble along with pick­ing off Mer­ri­mack quar­ter­back CJ Scarpa of An­dover four times.

Scarpa did throw for 387 yards and team­mate Cody De­mers of Dra­cut gained 114 yards in that to­tal with seven re­cep­tions.

LIU Post 51, Stone­hill 16 — Yianni Gavalas com­pleted 35-of43 passes for 405 yards and four scores as the de­fend­ing North­east 10 cham­pion Pioneers (30) blasted the Sky­hawks (1-2) in Brookville, N.Y.

New Haven 23, Saint Anselm 7 — Ajee Pat­ter­son con­nected on 19-of29 passes for 307 yards with a pair of scor­ing strikes to Devin Martin as the Charg­ers (2-1) topped the Hawks (0-3) in Man­ches­ter, N.H.
