Central Catholic shuts out Prep

In a clash between two of Division 1 North’s best, Central Catholic’s physicalit­y proved to be too much for St. John’s Prep.

Highlighte­d by a staunch defensive effort, and an offensive ground attack led by Max Faro and Ty Donatio, the Raiders defeated the Eagles, 21-0, last night at Veterans Memorial Field.

The Raiders defense, led by Ryan Burns, Donatio and Mathias Villafane (intercepti­on), held the Prep to 106 yards of offense through the first 31⁄2 quarters. St. John’s only got past midfield once.

Faro, alongside Donatio, provided a balanced attack for the Central offense, combining for 142 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Central Catholic senior quarterbac­k Bret Edwards was in command throughout the first half, going 7-for-12 for 110 yards and a touchdown.

On the Raiders second drive, Edwards converted a third-and-5 throwing deep on the run to Jake Delaney for a 45-yard completion. Two plays later, he ran it in from five yards out for a 7-0 lead.

Quarterbac­k Colin Frary threw three touchdown passes and ran for a fourth to lead Swampscott (2-0) to a 49-17 victory over Triton in nonleague play.

Nathan Martin threw two touchdown passes and ran for a third as South Boston (10) pulled away from Atlantis Charter in the second half for a 36-0 win.

Ryan Cahoon returned an intercepti­on 40 yards for a touchdown as Hingham (1-1) cranked up the defense in a 31-0 win over Wellesley.

Alec Iverson, Evan Gibb and Alex Sjoquist combined to rush for 158 yards and three touchdowns to pace Stoughton (2-0) to a 28-14 win over Catholic Memorial.

Win Tran scored three times as North Quincy (1-1) defeated Saugus, 37-20.

Kyle Zajack threw for 308 yards and five touchdowns to give Capital Prep (2-0) a 45-8 win over New Mission. Andrew Finklin scored the only touchdown for the Titans on a four-yard run.

Jose Caceres ran for 170 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries as Greater Lawrence (1-1) defeated Austin Prep, 37-8.

In a Commonweal­th Athletic Conference crossover game, Zach Sanderson ran for 165 yards and two touchdowns on six carries as Northeast Regional (1-1) blanked Chelsea, 42-0.

Steffan Gravely rushed for 224 yards and three touchdowns while picking off a pass and recovering a fumble as Lynn Tech (2-0) rolled past Mystic Valley, 43-6.

Gus Flaherty threw two TD passes to Nate McGrail as Pentucket (1-1) edged Amesbury, 23-20, in a Cape Ann League crossover contest.

Kyle Connolly ran for two scores and threw for a third as Falmouth (2-0) cruised to a 59-30 win over Westfield.

Marcus Aylmer ran for three scores as Cape Cod Tech (1-1) defeated Tri-County, 3014, in the Mayflower League.
