Alabama shows Vanderbilt who’s No. 1

Damien Harris ran for a careerhigh 151 yards and three touchdowns, Bo Scarbrough added two TDs and top-ranked Alabama routed Vanderbilt, 59-0, yesterday in Nashville, Tenn., in the Southeaste­rn Conference opener for both teams.

Alabama (4-0) now has won 19 straight over the SEC East. Better yet, the Crimson Tide hasn’t lost to Vanderbilt since 1984 or in Nashville since 1969. Both streaks were assured at the end of the first quarter with Alabama up 21-0 after the second of Harris’ scores.

Vanderbilt (3-1) came in with the nation’s stingiest defense in points, total yards and against the pass. Alabama finished with a 677-78 edge in total offense.

Oklahoma 49, Baylor 41 — In Waco, Texas, Baker Mayfield threw three touchdown passes, Abdul Adams had a 99-yard touchdown run to establish a school record and the No. 3 Sooners (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) held off the Bears (0-4, 0-1) to stretch the nation’s longest win- ning streak to 14.

Penn State 21, Iowa 19 — In Iowa City, Juwan Johnson caught a 7-yard TD pass on the final play and the No. 4 Nittany Lions (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) got 305 total yards from Saquon Barkley to avoid an upset against the Hawkeyes (3-1, 0-1), whose Akrum Wadley scored two fourth-quarter TDs.

USC 30, California 20 — In Berkeley, Calif., Stephen Carr ran for a fourth-quarter touchdown two plays after the defense forced one of its six turnovers and the No. 5 Trojans (4-0, 2-0 Pac-12) won their 13th straight game overall and 14th consecutiv­e against the Golden Bears (3-1, 0-1).

TCU 44, Oklahoma St. 31 — In Stillwater, Okla., Darius Anderson ran for 160 yards and three touchdowns, and the No. 16 Horned Frogs (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) upended the No. 6 Cowboys (3-1, 0-1), whose Mason Rudolph threw for 398 yards, two TDs and two intercepti­ons.

Michigan 28, Purdue 10 — In West Lafayette, Ind., Chris Evans ran for two touchdowns in the second half and backup quarterbac­k John O’Korn came on for an injured Wilson Speight to rally the No. 8 Wolverines (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) past the Boilermake­rs (2-2, 0-1).

Ohio St. 54, UNLV 21 — In Columbus, Ohio, J.T. Barrett threw touchdown passes to five different receivers in the first half and turned the reins over to Dwayned Haskins before the break, and the No. 10 Buckeyes (3-1) cruised to the easy win against the Rebels (1-2).

Georgia 31, Miss. St. 3 — In Athens, Ga., freshman Jake Fromm had two TD passes, the defense stifled counterpar­t Nick Fitzgerald and No. 11 Georgia (4-0, 1-0 SEC) used some trickery to top No. 17 Mississipp­i State in a Bulldogs battle.

N.C. State 27, Florida St. 21 — In Tallahasse­e, Fla., Ryan Finley threw for two TDs, Jaylen Samuels scored twice and the Wolfpack (3-1, 1-0 ACC) got their first road win over a ranked team since 2008 by beating the No. 12 Seminoles (0-2, 0-1).

Va. Tech 38, Old Dominion 0 — In Blacksburg, Va., Josh Jackson threw for three touchdowns and Steven Peoples scored three times, two via the air and once on the ground, leading the No. 13 Hokies (4-0) to the lopsided win against the Monarchs (2-2).

Miami 52, Toledo 30 — In Miami Gardens, Fla., Malik Rosier threw for 333 yards and three touchdowns, Mark Walton needed only 11 carries to rush for 204 yards and another score, and the No. 14 Hurricanes (2-0) beat the Rockets (3-1).

Auburn 51, Missouri 14 — In Columbia, Mo., Kerryon Johnson rushed for five touchdowns and No. 15 Auburn (3-1, 1-0 SEC) scored the big win against Missouri (1-3, 0-2) in the tussle of Tigers.

Washington St. 45, Nevada 7 — In Pullman, Wash., Luke Falk threw five touchdown passes to pace an offense the went for 560 yards, and the No. 18 Cougars (4-0) eased past the Wolf Pack (0-4).

Louisville 42, Kent St. 3 — In Louisville, Ky., Lamar Jackson accounted for three touchdowns to set a program career record with 88, and the No. 19 Cardinals (3-1) blasted the Golden Flashes (1-3).

Florida 28, Kentucky 27 — In Lexington, Ky., backup Luke Del Rio tossed a late 5-yard TD pass and the No. 20 Gators (2-1, 2-0 SEC) beat the Wildcats (3-1, 0-1) for the 31st consecutiv­e time.

San Diego St. 28, Air Force 24 — In Air Force Academy, Colo., Rashaad Penny scored three TDs and the No. 22 Aztecs (4-0, 1-0 Mountain West) edged the Falcons (1-2, 0-1).

LSU 35, Syracuse 26 — In Baton Rouge, La., Danny Etling threw scoring passes of 87 and 43 yards, and the No. 25 Tigers (3-1) beat back the relentless Orange (2-2).
