Johnson, Scott roll over rival

- By GREG DUDEK

BROCKTON — It didn’t take long for St. Mary’s to assert itself last night.

On the first play from scrimmage in a key Catholic Central League contest against Cardinal Spellman, Marlon Scott took a handoff 75 yards for a score and the Spartans kept on running from there.

The trio of Scott, Calvin Johnson and James Brumfield combined to rush for 439 yards and five touchdowns as St. Mary’s pulverized the Cardinals, 48-8, at Potvin Field.

“We prepared well and came out fast, physical,” said Johnson. “Their environment is crazy down here and we just finished the test.”

While Scott (nine carries, 126 yards) quickly opened the scoring, the night belonged to senior quarterback Johnson.

Johnson reminded everyone why he is the reigning CCL Large MVP by rushing for 160 yards and three touchdowns on just 11 carries — and using his arm.

He added to the lead with a 45-yard touchdown run before tossing a 25-yard scoring strike to Lee Pacheco.

“I won the CCL (Large MVP) last year, but I’m putting that behind,” Johnson said. “This is a new year. New team. Bigger goals this year.”

A 20-yard scamper by Johnson to paydirt just before halftime kept the Spartans rolling with a 28-0 lead.

Brumfield (15 carries, 153 yards) contributed to the rushing attack with a 60yard touchdown run in the third quarter before Johnson capped off his performance by weaving through the Spellman defense for a 58-yard score.

“Our backs, they got experience,” said St. Mary’s coach Matt Durgin, whose team has scored 200 points in four wins.

“Then you got Calvin, who at anytime, he has the ability to score. I thought the guys up front played very physical. It was just a team effort and that’s what we needed.”

Cardinal Spellman (31), which lost its starting quarterback, Rob Maguire, to an injury early in the first quarter, got a 10yard rushing touchdown from Justin Olowu (18 carries, 93 yards) in the third quarter.
