Lifestyle marries enchanting sounds, lyrics on ‘Regretro’

Boston has launched a handful of superb electropop acts (see Passion Pit, Bearstronaut, Orchids). But none of them embraces the panache of new romanticism that makes Lifestyle so amazing.

The other band of Freezepop founder Sean Drinkwater, Lifestyle manages to balance a fetish for retro beats and blips with production that echoes the best in modern pop. That delightful tightrope walk can be heard all across the new album, “Regretro.” Put a Carly Rae Jepsen vocal over the music of “Disguise” and it would kill on her album “Emotion”; have Phoenix’s Thomas Mars sing on “Cyclone” and it becomes a discotheque smash. But with Drinkwater’s voice, the tunes call back to the coy charisma of such suave ’80s crooners as Martin Fry and Tony Hadley.

It’s hard to pick out the top tracks. “Regretro” flows from one captivating dance thump to the next. But the songs that stand out feature Drinkwater peeling off dark lyrical couplets: “I can’t see ahead or where I’ve been/A neon ennui is setting in” on “Grey Ice” or “History will rewrite all your favorite songs/Blame it on the chemicals, we were wrong all along” on “Human Error.” The standouts make you think about your dwindling time while you dance it away.

Celebrate the thought/ dance revelation that is “Regretro” when Lifestyle plays tomorrow at Great Scott in Allston as part of the Pill’s 20th anniversary weekend.
